Bad Experiance with MidwayUSA.com
« on: October 01, 2009, 02:10:03 PM »
Thought I would tell everyone about another bad experience I had with Midway today. This one really makes me mad and I have decided to never do business with them again.

I was online looking for a pair of aftermarket grips for one of my Blackhawks. I'm scrolling through the 11 or so pages on their website in the section for Ruger Blackhawks. I run across a grip I like that was on sale at $33.10. So I put it in the cart and keep shopping. About 10 or so minutes later I decide I've had enough and go to check out. I go through all the screens to the end where you put in the credit card number. There  I notice the price says $64 buck and change!! What the heck?? I got back to the cart and it says $33.10 !!! I go forward all the way to final order confirm and it says $64 bucks & change!!

I call the 800 number while I have the screen up and I tell the CS person what I'm seeing. I give her the item number and she says the $64 bucks & change is correct..... Okay, I ask her, it’s in my shopping cart at $33.10! what gives....she tells me I'll have to talk to someone else. She turns me over to a supervisor (I guess) and she proceeds to tell me that the item came off sale from the time I entered in my cart to the time I got to check out!! I told I want it for the price that it’s in my cart ($33.10). She dialed into my account and confirmed it was in the cart at $33.10 and refused to let the sale go through at that price! I asked her if they are in stock and she said yes, but I'd have to pay the new price. When I asked her if she thought this was a fair approach she said yes, because Midway wanted to sell the excess inventory on that grip at the sale price and until the excess was sold and now they are at the correct inventory level and the sale is off.  I reminded her that it's already in my cart and the price you let me put it in my cart at. She said, sorry there's nothing I can do and she asked me if she could help me find another grip. I told her only if you'll help me at another on-line merchant! She politely said I'm sorry and then I said so am I that after 20+ years as a customer I done with Midway and hung up.

I have had occasional issues in the past with Midway but never enough to really pizz me off like this one. Last issue was with cleaning supplies. They did not pack them correctly and a small container of gun oil opened during transport. I've never had this type of BS happen with Cabela's, Budsgunshop, GeorgiaArms, Midsouth or any of the others I shop with. Usually the experience is good and if I've had an issue they fix it. Midway seems to take the position they do no wrong. Who knows, maybe it's just my experience with them, but I'm done with Midway after many, many years.

I woulda asked to talk to Larry himself. I think this needs to be reported to the BBB. I have always had great luck with Midway, they need to fix it.

She said, sorry there's nothing I can do and she asked me if she could help me find another grip.

I'd a told her that maybe she needed to get one.

I would have asked for someone a little higher up the ladder.
May not have helped but worth the try.

My only purchase from Midway pissed me off too. I ordered 2 clips(sorry magazines) for a .22. They were both listed as in stock. At the checkout, one clip was listed as back order. I asked for them to hold the order and ship them together to save on shipping. Long story short, they shipped each magazine out seperately a day apart and it cost me almost $ 60 bucks for 2 $12 dollar clips. No more.

That is a shame that a company like that would jeopardize customers for a few dollars I had two good experiences one with Lock Stock and Barrel when I ordered a Lee 3 hole turret press that was on close out, they ran out so sent me a 4 hole auto index instead at the 38 dollar sale price and the other was Buffalo Arms that had the wrong price on a steel framed 1860 army got it delivered to my door for $183.00.

I've only been buying stuff from them for the past 5 yrs or so and my experiences have been good.
Look at all the ill will that was created over thirty bucks! I would expect the cs person to stick with the policy line, but a supervisor? You can't fix stupid...individuals like that will cost the company a lot more than they're worth. Natchez is my favorite for service and good prices from the catalog companies.

Never had any problems with them in 25 years but i have had the same problem once with sears over a sale item. I had to pay what they asked but it really smoked my rear. I understand your feelings.

Actually Potterfield or someone from the company pretending to be him registered and did some posting on here a few years back when folks were complaining so loudly about them. Nothing changed tho and I seriously doubt it really was him but just some underling paid to watch the large sites like this one.

I have spent LOTS of money at Midway. Their performance has been flawless. This has been going on for years.

I've ordered some things from them and they sent what I paid for promptly. But If they changed prices after something was in my cart I would click the x and shop elsewhere.

The only problem I have ever had with midway is the constant ads, and the fact that their website is slower than smoke off a turd.

I have bought many items in the past, but I refuse to shop ther now because of the web pages taking a minute to load. Even with RR cable it takes forever. They lost a sizable order to MidSouth this week because of it.

As has been said, you may have tried to take it a bit higher.

Remember that these shops, like all things, are HEAVILY computer driven now.  Computer systems are my business, and I know that as someone who sets up such systems, generally there will be precious few users who can override what the computer says.  Usually for all the same reasons - you don't want users giving "discounts" or overriding prices for their buddies.

So, if the computer was set to pull the sales price once the inventory hit a certain level, then if she didn't have the access rights there may have literally been nothing she could do.  You can bet though that even if this was the case, there was definitely SOMEBODY in the house that could override it.

That said, I've not had any serious issues with their service before, but their website is a terribly coded critter.  I often end up having to hit refersh and reload pages several times to get them to actually come up correctly - the server is just choking on the workload.  They shoulda went with Linux/Apache/PHP instead of Windows/IIS/ASP.NET, but I digress . . . :)

I've been very happy with Midsouth Shooters Supply. I have bought from Midway but didn't like the terms for paying for the shipments, it was too quirky for me. I much prefer the model where the price is stated, and then the shipping cost is a separate item.

Never dealt with Midway but they seem to all but own the outdoor channel. On an opposing note I once ordered a box of .38's from Sportsmen's Guide and when it arrived the box was opened and loose cartridges were rolling around. I called them not to complain, but just give them a heads up, that they might want to secure the box better to avoid it happening. No product was damaged. A few days later a brand new box of ammo arrived at my door, completely unexpected. Now that is customer service!

I too shopped with midway for many years as well as cheaper than dirt(owned by Potterfield I believe). The shipping went crazy on both so I switched to Midsouth Shooter's Supply and Natchez Shooter's supply. I have not run into anything yet I couldn't find between the two but when I do I will try Brownells. The prices are higher, but when shipping is factored in it is the same as Potterfield.
