Advice please
« on: October 07, 2009, 03:50:54 PM »
I need advice (not criticism) from someone more knowledgable than me. I have contacted Wayne York about having him rechamber and rebore a barrel for me to 25 Remington. I already have an old Rem. Model 141 in that caliber, but my eyesight is not what it once was, so iron sights are fuzzy. I like the cartridge and would like a Handi in that chambering so I can use a scope. I suggested to Wayne using the 223 Rem. barrel for the work, but he said it wouldn't work and suggested to me that a 22 WMR barrel would be the one to use. My question is, if I decide to do this, can I order an accessory 22 WMR barrel to fit an SB2 frame or do I have to buy a whole rifle? If I buy the rifle will the receiver work with a centerfire cartridge? Will the rimfire receiver handle the pressure of the 25 Remington?

Thanks for your feedback.

Jeff

Why not a 22 hornet? But I think the best option would be a stub barrel.

I think to answer your question....The Handi's are not like Contenders. You can't switch from rimfire to centerfire. H&R won't fit a rimfire barrel to a centerfire receiver or vice versa.

You may want to start watching out for a used WMR barrel to fit to your receiver

Peternap is right, H&R will not fit a rimfire barrel to an SB1 or SB2 frame, only to an SS1, the Hornet would be a better choice, it's 4140 alloy instead of 1137 steel for the rimfire barrel, a rebore or stub will work fine, he does both.

For my .25-20 barrel I sent Wayne a .22 Hornet barrel. I also suggest you use one for your .25 Remington project.

Gomerdog, I think you may have trouble finding brass for the 25 rem.
I am sure Wayne will do it Hornett barrel. He did a 25-35 Win on 223 barrel/
 It worked out great Marv.

BA lists it, but it can be made by turning down the rim on .25-35 cases to body diameter and cutting an extractor groove, then running it in a .25 Rem. die.

I think you could neck down the easier to find .30 Remington. Probably a single pass in your FL .25 Remington sizer would do it. If .30 Remington is too hard to find I suspect you could use the common 6.8 SPC as its parent is the .30 Remington.

I haven't researched any of this but i think it is accurate.

I have almost 200 pieces 25 Remington brass that I necked down from 30 Remington and then reamed the case neck. When I seated bullets without reaming the case neck, the neck was shaving a small amount of copper from the bullet jackets. This brass works real well in the Model 141 that I already have. I have everything I need to reload: dies, brass, bullets, etc. Just want a Handi that I can put a scope on.

I did trade e-mails with Wayne today, and he said I could use a 22 Hornet barrel for the project. When I stopped by my local gun shop today after work and picked up a NEF catalog, I could not find where they offer a complete rifle in 22 Hornet. Is that true? I looked at their website and see there that complete 22 Hornet rifles are offered. I wanted a receiver strictly dedicated to this barrel, thus a new rifle. Will I have to buy an accessory barrel and have it fitted to one of my other frames?

Well, I have committed myself to this project. My local gun dealer was able to find a Hornet, and I have ordered it. Should be here next week. Then I'll send it to Wayne in November when he says that most of his hunting seasons are over and he'll have time to work on it. Then it will be 12 to 16 weeks after that when it should be finished. Should be a nice springtime project to find a (few) accurate loads for it.

The 30 Remington brass is easy to find and will work great.
Just run them up in the 25 size die and you are done.
I have been doing this for years with great results.

Took the first two bucks of my life with the 25 rem in a
Rem model 30S EXPRESS with factory 117gr round nose.
Fine little cartridge!
