480 vs 50 ae

For big game hunting which is the better round? I'm thinking in a BFR revolver.  They both aren't very popular but don't have the recoil of the 500 S&W. I have a 454 SRH already. What's your thoughts between the two? By the way I handload, just looking for a bigger bullet caliber.

Go with the .480 or .475 Linebaugh, or even the.500JRH available from the Magnum research Custom Shop / Performance Center.
The .50AE is a tapered rimless case which headspaces on the mouth. My own experience with it has shown that it can be as accurate as the others, but generally with somewhat reduced loads to prevent the bullet creep inherent with a magnum cartridge that can't be heavily roll crimped (because of the tapered case and headspacing on the mouth). My own preference of all cartridges in this class is the .475 Linbebaugh.

I like the 500. You can use 275gr to 700gr. Down load to your comfort level or full loads.
The 350gr with 20gr of lil'gun mild and still about 1100 fps. I got 1750 fps with a 400gr and 37gr of lil'gun.

the 50ae is a good round but the crimping problems make a finiky round to load for. Ive allways wanted a 4 inch redhawk chambered for it with moon clips. A guy could headspace on the clip that way. Just  dont have that kind of money anymore.

480 without a doubt.. Great round, and if I am not mistaken it is 475 Linebaugh/ 480 Ruger in the BFR.

 TGFOGAL, are you sure about a 700 gr. bullet in the 50 AE?  The 500 mag yes, but the 50AE???

got to agree. Theres no way your going to get anything near 1700 with a 400 grain bullet in the 50ae. At least not with out loosing your hand when it  blows up.

I have only used the 480 but it is a great round.

The platform is reliable and accurate.

I have one and my oldest son has one… and I would not get sell it… at all.

If you hand load you get more choices in ammo… just like any other round

If you're looking for bigger holes, why not stay with .500 S&W or Freedom Arms .500 Wyoming Express or perhaps BFR's newer .50 caliber(I believe these are even bigger than the S&W bullets). As stated earlier in the thread, you can always load lower to suit yourself? And can always load for  Tyrannosaurus Rex if you so desire? But, you must remember, bullet placement is key to any hunting success?

S.B. the other BFR 500 is a 500JRH which is about like a S&W 500 Mag Spical. Not as big as the 500 Mag. The .500 JRH is about 1.4" long, and, is a cutdown version of the 500 S&W. You can use the same dies to reload it, and, I think this will soon be the new S&W 500 Special.

You can shoot the 500 Special, the 500 JRH and the S&W 500 Mag in the BFR 500 Mag, but you can't shoot a 500 mag in the 500 JRH.

Thought I saw some pictures of the JHR somewhere, doesn't it have a rebated rim? So, maybe just a different shell holder? Thanks for your input, Redhawk1. I personally think any of the calibers mentioned would serve well.

Jack Huntington started with the 348 Winchester case cut down. When S&W came out with the S&W 500 Mag, Jack used the 500 Mags brass for the 500 JRH. You use the same shell holder for the 500 JRH as the 500 Mag. Now there is stamped 500 JRH brass out there.

the 500 linebaugh is not a production gun. The only avenue to getting one is through the custom gunmakers.

I would go with the 480 Ruger if it was me. Since you handload ammo selection will not be a problem.
