Stock swaps
« on: October 10, 2009, 07:29:35 PM »
Well, I have a .54 Renegade that has a Lyman 57SML sight on it that I do not care for, I would much rather have a T/C tang sight. The problem I have is the previous owner relieved the stock for the Lyman piece and I don't want to end up with a stock with a notch out of it. So I either ned to find someone who wants a Lyman57 and is willing to swap stocks OR I need to order new furniture and fit it.

sugestions?? good place to get good looking stock cheap?
Yes, I know it's cocked, It's got bullets too.

"good" and "cheap" ain't gonna fit in the same sentence. unless you find someone interested in the trade you mentioned your options probably are to either learn to like the sight on the gun or find someone who can make a not very noticable stock repair where wood was removed for sight. just my opinion, bubba. good luck.

You might want to check on E-bay.  E-Bay won't let you sell guns on their site but they will let you sell parts.  Such as this one:     http://cgi.ebay.com/Thompson-Center-Renegade-Percussion-Stock-Exc_W0QQitemZ140350767310QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Hunting?hash=item20ad8ec0ce

Yup, what ironwood said, e-bay. Most are listed under "black powder". He provided the link for searching.
People will strip all the furniture off a stock and sell the individual components. The one Ironwood has linked is a Renegade Hunter with a single trigger. But if you watch for just a few weeks you'll see the standard stocks go for 50-100 with about 15 for shipping.
Advise; Buy another stock for yourself, all your parts will transfer hassel free, then list yours for 10 days with a specific statement "inlet for 57 sml" and you'll find a buyer for very likley the cost you have in the new stock. You can start with a minimum bid.
At one time I wanted to put a 57 on a Renegade, but I just couldn't bring myself to cutting the wood, once you do your stuck with it. I'm sure the are a BUNCH of folks out there that have the same idea, and would rather have another stock.

I'm curious, haveing had both the 57 and the T/C peep in my hand ( the 57 being a much better sight).
What is it you don't like?

I do not care for it standing proud of the top of the rifle or hanging off the side. If it was a range/target piece I probably wouldn't mind near as much but it is a woods gun and the way it stands up it is just begging to get snagged on something and jerked off zero. I doubt it would move, it is just a personal thing. I prefer a peep and the T/C piece appers to "flow" with the lines of the rifle. I also don't like fiddling with sights in the field. I would just a soon set it for 100yrds and figure my hold over/under than to have a sight with a buch of adjustment to get wacked at just the right moment(that Murphy's Law/ K.I.S.S. thing)

I have been looking around and REALLY like the Kit Carson Hawken from TOTW. The cressent buttplate and two wedge keys trip my trigger so to speak and the non brass hardwear follow the Renegade line of thought.

AAHhhh, that too is very nice and if I did not already have a rifle and had a couple hundred extra bucks around I would be all ove either(KC being two bills more). I am tring to figure how to get what I want on a shoe string.
