I set a #330 today on a well used run in the water.The #330 is sticking out of the water about 6 inches.I have about 4 feet of 1/8 cable with an ajustable end on both sides of the cable.I anchored this off to a 30 inch rebar stake and just in case he could pull this out I wired 4 pices is 14 gauge wire from the cable to a clump of willows and singed it tight.Then I added beaver lure and white sticks.Will this be a good set and hold a beaver?

Yes it will hold a beaver,and probably any swimming elephants that encounter your 330.1/8 inch cable and 30 inch rebar should be sufficient.I use cable and in most places a 24 inch rebar stake.
I use mainly 330s and castor mounds with trap at least half submerged. Tom

Will just the 4 starands of 14 gauge wire holed a beaver?I have a problem of over doing it on the tieing part of ancoring my traps.There also apears to be a sent mound on the bank to so I added some castor and white sticks.

Coniboy,
If you have to pack your traps very far you may want to do away with the rebar and go with seasoned and dryed wood stakes. You can stomp a 12-16inch stake in the mud under the water (like Charles Dobbins did in his video-Open Water Beaver Trapping) and they hold great. I cut mine over the summer and let them dry. Drill a hole for cable or wire and pre-wire them to your traps. They are light as a feather and you wont have to pack all that rebar.

How good are the wooden stakes compared to rebar?How do you get the cable to stay on the stake?

Obviously wood is not as strong as rebar, however, wood stakes will work well if used properly.
I always attatch my stakes with 14 or 11 ga wire when after beaver. I simply run the wire through the hole (I drilled) near the top of the stake
If cable is desired I guess you could use one of the alluminum cable ferrules that the guys use when making snares.

The key to wood stakes is a mud bottom and stomping them as far into the mud as you can with your heel.

Well that beats the hell out of the other extreme.
If all of the kids would do that,(and some of these adults as well) at least there wouldn't be many loose traps around.
