Pheasant
« on: December 06, 2009, 12:39:36 PM »
I went pheasant hunting for the first time today.
I would like to have a keepsake of my first hunt.
Any suggestions?
Skin it and cure the hide somehow?
Some type of feather display?
Is it difficult to mount a pheasant? Something a novice could do?

Were it my first pheasant (I've never killed one) I'd take it to a taxidermist to have it done right.

I agree with Graybeard. Full mount is the way to go. I would have done this years ago if i would have known the pheasant was going to go the way of the dinosaur in this area. 50 years ago i could get off the school bus in the afternoon. Run in the house and grab my gun and dog and hit the little field across from my parents house. It was nothing to shoot my limit by the time i got to the back of the field. Where do they still have pheasants?  ???. I have seen four birds in the last 17 years. :(.

It's a state run place. They release a bunch of birds. Hopefully some will sirvive and the population will increase but that's doubtful.

There was a state run pheasant farm not to far from me. The state shut it down. I am not sure if the state of NY does it anymore. A friend of mine use to raise them for 4H. Don't think they do it anymore either. :(.

I've made a couple of calls and it seems $150 is the going price. I could buy one from sportsmans guide for $115 but it wouldn't be the bird I shot.

I'm going to drop it off tommorrow once I get the okay from my financial advisor.
