I just acquired a nice, used .445 in stainless with an 8" weighted, vent barrel.   I can't wait to load some up and send 'em down range.

Any reloading tips/favorite recipe's would be appreciated.  Know of any sources for affordable brass for the .445?  I just ordered 250 from DW and man did that smart!

How's the recoil on this beast.  The heaviest I've shot was 300gr 45/70 Remington hunting loads from a 14" ported contender.  Any idea how my new beastie will compare?

Thanks in advance for all feedback.

Been shooting the DW445 for going on 10 years now. I have gone through 4 barrels and the frame is still tight. Unfortunately the starline brass does not allow you to develope the full potential of this cartridge.

My old IHMSA load and current hunting load (taken from the silhouette) is:
WW-680 (32Gr.)
240 Gr. Speer TMJ
Fed 200 Primers
Trim length 1.605"/1.607"

Here is the real interesting part:
Manufacture from 30-40 Krag brass. Face rim to .058" thickness & .535" Dia. Trim mouth if needed so that loaded O.D. is .452"
Prep Sequence: 1)Trim off below neck 2)Trim rim thickness & O.D. 3)Flare Mouth 4)Trim O.A.L 5)Fire form
Fire form load = 25.5 Gr. H4227, Speer 240 Gr., Fed 210, light to no crimp
Measurements: Cyl Base = .459", Case base = .459", Case mouth dia = .452"(30/40) & .448"(Gates)

As always, approach load carefully and reduce load at any sign of excess pressure.

What are the limitations of Starline brass?  I seriously doubt I'll be making my own.

Is this gun prone to 'eating' barrels?

Thanks,

The starline brass is thinner than 30-40 Krag brass. The starline is designed to wok at magnum pistol pressures, and as such is prone to primer pocket enlargement and bulging near the rim. It works at pressures and velocities listed on the Dan Wesson site, but we (first people to receive the DW445's back at the beginning of production, when it was available through IHMSA only) soon learned it could withstand very high pressures so we formed our own brass from 30-40 Krag. There is an old article in the Silhouette that has our first load data. I believe Elgin Gates published the article. If I can dig it out I can send you a copy via e-mail. Let me know if you are interested.

The barrels do wear faster than most large calibers (about 2000 rounds), but new ones are available through Dan Wesson or Brownells for a nominal cost.

The large frame and the grip design make recoil very managable. Just keep the barrel cyliner gap at .003"/.004" to prevent excessive frame cutting from the hot gasses.

I did try pachmayer grips once, but found that the standard grips worked better when shooting in metallic silhouette the creedmore position.

Corky  if not too late I love my 445 supermag and was interested in what you have to say regarding Brass.  I would love to see what loads you can get when using 30-40 brass.  So if not too late please send it my way too.

Thanks and regards

Ps any pet smoking loads that you have will be much appreciated too.

I'd appreciate any information that folks can give.  I just bought the DW and can't wait to take it to the range.

I've got to make a run and get powder and primers.  I picked up some jacketed bullets on Friday.  All I need now is for my brass to arrive.

I can always put .44 Mag through it, but I'm excited to use the gun with the loads it was designed for......and thump a few pigs with it this season!

:gun4: Brainb  Sounds like good advice to me.  If you need Load Data, will be glad to send it to you.  I do have the 30-40 Krag rifle brass article.  We had 3 runs of brass done.  IHMSA and GATES brass.  I have articles on that too.  Good Shooting

At this point, I'll take anything and everything I can get.  I'll be grateful for any articles and load data.  I picked up some A1680 to start experimenting with and got some Federal 210 primers.  Now I just need for my brass to arrive.

Hey put me on any list for any kind of good info on the 445 supermag.  I'll take anything you guys have.

E-mail me at talltines2@aol.com

Thanks

Another question I thought if you are using starline brass you couldn't use rifle primers unless you get the brass from them that is especially made for rifle primers.  I am going to order some brass but don't know what ones to get.  Please fill me in on the facts of this.  I did call DW and they said we have brass that is made for the rifle primers but you have to ask for it otherwise you get the ones for pistol primers.

Thanks

Brian

I've called this question in to DW.  I have a brass order pending with them.

They're having to order it from Starline, so it's gonna be a couple of weeks.  DRAT DRAT DRAT.  I am SO looking forward to 'lighting a few off' in my new hand cannon!

:gun4: I haven't talked to Starline lately, by the way Sierra and Starline are accross the parking lot from each other.  Bob sr. runs Sierra and Bob Jr. runs starline.  Good people.  I do have several thousand rounds of Starline brass in the 445 and 414E.T.Gates.  I think the 445 is large pistol pocket.  If you need some shipping would be from Colorado Springs CO.  Let me know.

:gun4: Aaron, price is better than going to other outlets.  If you count time as money, throw in gas etc, I don't make money on these deals.  I willing to help people out who love Supermags Hoglegs.  Dad did these type of things all of his life.  At one time IHMSA had 48000 members.  At that time the average working family could afford several over-the-counter, out-of-the-box handguns.  Price them now!!!  Send me a PM and I'll get you the price.
Glad to help you
