A freind and I both put a EZ tip extractor on our 209-50MLs and went to the range Saturday, everything went good til my sixth shot, when I broke open the action on my Encore the extractor broke off and fell on the ground and after my buddy shot his tenth shot his broke off too.Just thought I would give everyone a heads up on them just in case someone is thinking about putting one on there Encore...

You guys are lucky.  Mine broke on the very first shot.  I sent it back to Fox Ridge and they refunded my purchase price and the shipping.

After I first shot my Encore and cleaned it I removed the extractor. It is not needed, I have never had a problem just pulling the primer out with my fingers.

Hello All, :D
I'm new here, just signed up last night and did a bit of reading. Lots of great information to be had.

I just picked up a stainless Encore ML in .45 cal, 1:28 BTW, and was thinking about getting the EZ tip extractor. Glad I read this report on them.

But I have a question on removing the standard factory extractors. Looking at it this AM on my rifle, I noticed that the lip on the extractor is about .020 to .030 thick, and the breach plug surface is completely flat all the way around for obvious reasons.
Now, if you remove the stock ejector, and installed a primer, it will be the thickness of the lip further forward directly against the breach plug. Giving it the same amount of  extra play between the breach plug and the face of the frame. It can fall forward against the plug, thereby being  further from the firing pin by the thickness of the extractor lip. Or fall back toward the frame. in either situation it could possibly have a light pin strike because of the excessive play. I don't think it can cause a blowout on the side of the primer because with the extractor in position, it is still only supported by the outer wall of the breach plug the same as if the extractor was missing.
Do you understand what I'm trying to convey ??
Has anyone had any problems with this "loose primer" syndrome???

Thanks.

Stay Safe,
Franz

Thanks for the reply Underclocked.

I was looking at it again after I posted and I'm thinking that the primer may be held back in it's position by the front edge of the "chamber" it's in, and that the extractor doesn't have any or much to do with the position of the primer. Only pulling it away from the breach plug to be ejected.

When I get some time, I'll take some measurements and see what it all is about. Sorry to say,   I'm anal that way. Must have something to do with being German.  :D

Thanks again.

Franz,

FWIW, the Encore and Omega breech plugs are IDENTICAL.

Thanks Randy,
Free information is always worth something.  :-)
I figured that out this past monday when I decided to order an extra plug and they were the same part number.

I shelled out almost $17 for my EZtip extractor and took it back without installing it.

Then I removed my original extractor and have shot about 200 full-power loads and maybe 3-400 primer-only shots (fouling-drying shots). I have not seen damage to any primers and every shot has been flawless since.

I only need to flip them out with my thumbnail, they almost fall out.
In fact they WILL fall out if the action is over-turned. I didn't even need to polish the ID of the primer pocket like a local "expert" told me I would.

I'm thinking the extractor is superfluous on the 209x50.
It was on mine (a SS Whitetail Special).

i was told after i sold mine to just leave the screw that hold the extractor out. when you are ready to clean lift out the extractor and remove the plug.

Just curious.  Was the extractor tip on yours made of plastic?  They look like red plastic in their catalog.

I had a local shop order one for me and it finally arrive today after a long back order.  When I looked at it everything appears to be made out of metal.  If they were plastic before then maybe they fixed the breakage problem.   After reading this thread I decided against buying it, of course his $19.95 price tag on it sure made that decision easy.

I took mine out after I shot my first round through it and it has worked just fine without it.  Now all I need to do is figure out how to make it hold some sort of group that I can hunt with.  I've been trying to get by without a scope but I think I'm going to have to invest in one.

The one I had was all metal, lasted one shot.
