I bought a new computer today.

Yes I bought a new computer today. WOW what a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My old one was about 8 years old.  They are comming out with some type of new operating system next week. So it seems that everyone has a sale on the old ones. I payed $298.00 before tax. The big wide screen sure is nice. ;D Before I only had like a 12 Gig hard drive. Now I have a 160 Gig hard drive. ;D This is plenty for me and I can down load movies and other things and not worry how much space I have left. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Dale

The Microsoft 7OS is supposed to be out October 22nd. It is supposed to fix the problems they are having with Vista.  Check the documents that came with your computer. Many computers being sold now come with a free download to upgrade to  Microsoft 7 when it is available.

If the new computer uses Vista for an OS you have my sympathy. I'm sure tho it won't take you long with your surfing habits to have it packed full of spyware and perhaps worse. Make sure you use a really good spyware and virus protection and update it daily.

I think you are ahead of the curve on this one.  Microsoft has a track record of releasing products that need a lot of work to get them right.  From its track record, I would expect that people will be going back to  Vista or even XP  to get around the headaches from Windows 7.  A friend who has a computer shop made a good bit of money reinstalling XP on computers that came out with Vista, when it first came out.

Let me interject a question.
I thought my operating system was XP---but now I am lead to believe it is VISTA.
Mine is several years old and was the first use of the XP.
What am I misunderstanding?

If it says XP when it starts up, then it's XP. If it says Vista, then it's Vista. There would not have been any automatic upgrade to Vista if your PC had started with XP installed.

As for the new operating system, it doesn't mean that your old computer has lost any of its utility. The planned obsolescence built into the computers and software will limit its lifespan to about 7 years whether the hardware is still good or not.

My computer uses Vista and it works fine. The only thing I don't like about it is that we now practically need a super computer just to do e-mails, internet, wordprocessing and spreadsheets.

Yes, it is possible to do even wordprocessing on a home computer, but it needs at least 1000000000000 Gigabytes of disk space and a 99999999999999 MHz CPU.

Vista ain't that bad completely patched up.  Security-wise, it's better than XP (though a bit slower and with some annoying dialogs).  It has some compatibility issues with some older programs though (namely, it's security model is tighter and some programs just won't work when cut off from certain functions that the OS used to let them do).  Also, it uses a different driver model now, and since a lot of drivers had to be rewritten from the 2000/XP versions (which had since 1999 to be brought up to spec), there was some initial instability just from drivers.

Truthfully though between a fully patched version of Vista with updated drivers, and the new Windows 7, there's not a ton of difference.  Microsoft is mostly pushing out Windows 7 because Vista started out a bit rocky and even though most of the stuff is fixed (well, fixed as much as a Microsoft OS is gonna get ;)) the Vista name now as a stigma attached to it.

Whatever the case, go grab a copy of Firefox (www.getfirefox.com). It's a much safer browser than IE.  If you want the safest computing experience though, Linux or Mac is the way to go.  Mac's take special hardware (ie, you have to buy a mac computer - kinda, anyways.  you can make MacOS run on a "regular" computer but it's not a beginner's project) but Linux will run on just about anything you put in front of it.  Not much of a gaming OS, but for surfing the web and keeping the machine going it works very well, and it's available free of charge.

Careful what you ask for Rudy. Matt might see it and sell you one of the 200 or more stacked up in my barn. They are older tech tho mostly P2s, P3s with a few P4s I think. I wish someone would buy them ALL so I could have my barn back.  :o

When I bought mine could not find a new computer with XP, except for some notebooks. We have 2 desktops and a laptop. All had the Vista Premium OS. Ive not had problems with Vista, except some older programs will not run. Unfortunately, the program we use for work is one of the ones of those. We had to have one converted to XP.

Congrats on the new PC Dale.  ;) I've been playing with Win7 RC for over a month on another machine I built, I can't see it doing anything XP Pro can't do for me that needs doing, I'll stick with what I got, XP works great with no problems, all of my software and hardware are working great, can't say the same if I did a fresh install of Win7, there is no upgrade version from XP to 7, just from Vista to 7, which means if you're running XP now, you must do a clean install of 7, load all your software on it, if it will run  ???, then transfer files and settings with their wizard.  :-\

new computors with vista are light years ahead of 98-me computors newer ones with xp are just fine but vista is still a better program so many utilities and stuff in it. the move to vista really requires the latest programs and components in your computor. thats not a bad thing as the vista design forces compatability.

i have vista and love it.

I do like the new computer a lot. I have alot of hard drive I have never had before. My old computer started with a 80 gig hard drive and it went bad. I lost a lot pictures that can not be replaced because of the crap hard drive. At the time I did not have the money to replace the drive with the same size so I just had the guy throw in what he had lying around. Yea it was only 12 gig and with allthe programs I had on my pc I only had about 1.5 gig left for what ever I wanted to download and watch. Then I had to delete them right after or my hard drive would be full. I wanted to add a external hard drive but could not because I did not have a high speed USB port and it seems that is what those run off of. I was just plain stuck and needed to upgrade. This is still not a top notch computer but it is still several steps above my old one. I am sure I will be looking for another in a few years. Dale

Redtail1949, I think you hit the nail on the head about being forced to use the latest programs. My Vista machines have been the most stable platforms I have ever used. Unfortunately the Boss likes his DOS based dispatch program, dosen't play well with Vista at all. He has been playing with the MS7OS and says it works fine with it.  Guess we will see in a few weeks.
