"Clumpy" 777
« on: October 02, 2009, 08:37:10 AM »
Just taking stock of B/P components and noticed my old 777 has clumps in it.  I stored it in military ammo box with silica pack.  Will this powder still ignite with reliability or should I dump it?  How do you store your powder?  How long will it keep?  Thanks, Al

I have some that is clumpy and I had one miss fire in about 20 rounds so far. I just take the clumps and squish them with my fingers. All seems well.

If your powder is "clumpy" then it has most likely drawn moisture while in storage. If it were me, I would dump it and buy new powder just to be safe. Just my opinion, but I dont want to take the chance that "clumpy" powder wont go "boom" when I pull the trigger.

I had some 777 that was a few years old and didn't look too bad except it had clumped a little in the flask. After a very frustrating experience trying to sight in a new gun and spraying shots all over, I dumped it and bought 50 grn pellets and had it where I wanted it in less than 10 shots. I really resisted going to pellets because I like to play with my loads and usually end up around 110 grns, but the pellets are really nice and easy to load. I would like to play with the sabots more, but MZ season is next week and I'll take 1.5-2" groups for now.
