Well, on the 15th I was in a unit in North West Wy. for the opener of deer season. We saw lots of game, elk, moose, and about 40 deer. I had my long range deer rifle for much of this country long shooting across canyons is the norm. In this case I had a heavy barreled .300, but in addition, I had a Marlin 336 with a 24 in. barrel .30-30 with 150 grain Silvertips as my close range rifle. While most shot are long, there are pockets and timbered areas that close range shots are encountered. The last thing in the evening, I explored one of these. It was a burned over area. Before entering it, I told my girl friend, these burns are suppose to be great spots, but I have never seen a deer here. I hadn't gone far when I spotted a set of antlers in the last rays of the sun.
There were two deer, one a mature four by four. I got the crosshairs of the Burris 4x on his rib cage, and squeezed one off. He started to step as I shot, but almost fell instead staggered, and got down over a little hill before I could shoot again. I heard a crash, on investigation, I found a big blotch of blood and a few feet farther on the buck lay. Not a monster, but a nice mature 4x4 mulie.
