Powder for 204-270 and 300 win mag?
« on: October 15, 2009, 10:15:24 PM »
I found a dealer that has some powder. He has Varget, Benchmark and some 4831SC. I have never used any of these powders before. I was thinking benchmark for the 204 and Varget for the 270 and the 300 if possible. I would think 4831SC would be better for the 300. What is the difference in 4831 and 4831SC. I have used 4350 in the 270 but powder is not easy to find. Any help would be greatly appricated. Don

Taking a peek at Hdy# 7 manual it appears Benchmark will give you slightly higher V's with their 32 gr. bullet then Varget.

Once you go to the 40 and45 gr weights, Varget is a better choice presuming your rifle likes it.

IMR 4831 and the sc version are the same or close enough to be interchangable, however I still would go in small steps toward max loads when using the standard IMR 4831 loads when using the short cut type.

Varget is listed for 150 gr bullets for the 300 Win Mag but nothing heavier.
IMR 4831 is listed for the 150 gr to 220gr bullet with the exception of the 178 to 180 gr weight. I'm confident you would find that powder listed for that weight in other manuals :)

4831 is the old time favorite of a lot of people for the 270.

Be sure which 4831 you're getting. The IMR and Hodgdon are close, but different. I've been using the H4831SC since it came out and H4831 before that. The H4831SC is a shorter cut(SC) powder. I think my brotherinlaw uses it in his 270. I use it exclusively in my 243 with heavier bullets.
