New Alliant Powder Loading Manual

Today I received the new manual.  I was greatly disapointed.   Once again they have kept their 45 Colt loads strictly for Colt level loadings, ignoring those of us that use thier powder for hunting.  In their 2004 manual they at least had a mild 300Hp/XTP load of 12.5 Grn of 2400 for 735fps.  This manual stops at 260 Grn using Blue Dot, 13 Grn for 941 fps.  I sent them a Email complaining, maybe if enough of us did they would have a Ruger/TC only section.  This one doesn't evan have a Silhouette Data section just Cowboy and standard!

Is that a pamphlet-type manual?

I am just curious as there is plenty of data out there, maybe Handloader Magazine, for Ruger or T/C handguns...

I am shooting 21 grains under a RCBS-45-270-SAA which weighs in at 283 grains.  I realize it is cast as opposed to jacketed, but I got that data someplace, and I know it is within my Blackhawk limits.  It is actually probably a bit light, although approaching the MAXIMUM ZONE...

Look for other data.  One source is only a starting point...

It is a booklette.  I know there is other data out there, but that is the problem;  it veries so much.  You would think the people that make it would know its limitations better than anyone else.  I have had manuals that give the max load of the 250 Grn XTP 17.5 2400 others as high as 20Grn?

I have also been in that circumstance and what I do is find all the data I can for that particular boolit weight and composition, that is, copper or cast.  I don’t interchange data.
I then take all of the starting charges and average them.  I do the same with all of the maximum charges.  Then I average the two averages from the lows and highs.  With that number you can compare it to all of the data you have available and see where it falls with the minimums and maximums for all…

That might be worth a try and maybe it will fall into the Alliant data you have.  Work from there and use sensible reloading practices and you will approach the maximum for whatever you are shooting.  Many times it isn’t the maximum load that shoots the best…

The only gun/cal I was ever able to get the tightest group then have it spred before max was the .41 mag.  Everything else kept getting tighter up to max.   My point in posting this subject was to hopefully get more poeple to complain to Alliant to give a hunting section in the future.

Just as a point of interest:  I recieved an answer from Alliant.  "Our latest data was developed by Speer, a sister company.  Naturally they tested their own bullets but Speer does not make a 300 gr bullet for the 45 Colt."  They then went on to give me the Hornady loading for the 300 gr XTP:  a starting load 16.5 grns 2400 to max of 18 grns.  THIS IS A RUGER & T/C ONLY LOAD DATA.  Have a nice day.
