Crisscross For Powders ???
« on: October 15, 2003, 01:27:29 PM »
If a load calls for so many grains of IMR-4350 how would one know how many grains of H-4350 it would take to get the same results?  Is there a formula for this?

Not being smart but you should find a manual that lists the cartridge and bullet weight you want with H4350. These two powders are very close to each other but I would still rather work from listed loads when possable. As far as I know there are no formulas to go from one powder to another, different, powder. There are just too many variables.

Gotta agree with bruceP, trying to cross reference powders is a very dangerous practice to get into. There is just too much reloading info out there to justify trying to do that.  KN

To find out, you go to Hogdon's Website and look up the load you want to know.

I treat them as different powders and consider the naming coincidence a disservice to handloaders.  I use H4831SC, not H4831 or IMR4831.  The reloading manuals treat them as different, and so do I.

razmuz,

There is a short article concerning the 4350's in the December 2002 issue of Handloader Magazine.  This article indicates AAC-4350 then IMR-4350 then H-4350...Listed slowest to fastest.  It would be worth looking at this short article.

Personally, AND I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS, I have used them interchangable in my 270's.  I always started with the lightest charge listed for a particular bullet and went from there.  Never had a problem.  Maybe I was lucky!!!  Actually I don't use it much anymore since I mostly use surplus powders now and avoid the high cost per pound of canister powder.  Good-luck...BCB
