Encore with Percussion Cap

New to the board, great resource. Here's an interesting question.

In Idaho, 209 primers on a muzzleloader are a no,no. Anyone know if the encore can be fitted to handle a percussion cap? I think I know the answer, but I thought I would ask. Cheers. thanks for any answers.

     Nothing is impossible...but it would require a VERY custom breech plug.  Also, it would still be an "in-line", which is a no-no in some places....don't know 'bout I-dee-ho.

Inline ok...except for the traditional hunts (if there are any). Just can't use the 209.....sure would like the custom breech.

You would have to check more your local laws but there is a breech plug that takes a .380 casing with a small pistol primer. Just a thought.

     Yes!.....if all you have to do is get away from the 209 primer you in luck.  Cecil Epp at Precision Rifle makes a replacement breech plug that uses 25acp brass and any small size rifle or pistol primer.  I use it with CCI 400 primers and really like it.  This system has made my Encore a tack driver, cuts out any fouling blow back and the 25 brass is a joy for my old fingers to handle in the morning darkness :D.  Total cost is probably about 100 bucks for the plug, brass and a set of 25acp dies.  Cecil also makes some mighty fine bullets.   www.prbullet.com

If I am not mistaken the rules say that he MUST use No.11 or musket caps which mean a no.11 nipple or a musket nipple and I cannot see a way to use either one of them in a closed breach weapon that uses a firing pin. I would get a diffrent rifle that is made for the cap required by law.

Here are the rules. Rifle seasons and varmit hunting the barrel is good. the 209 system is good. Otherwise, here are the actual Idaho rules for the 09-10 season as they stand today. thanks for the info....

Muzzleloader-Only Season
Any person hunting in a muzzleloader-only season, including controlled hunts, must have in their possession a license with a muzzleloader permit validation. During a muzzleloader- only season, it is illegal to pursue or kill a big game animal with any firearm, muzzleloading pistol, or weapon other
than a muzzleloading rifle or musket. In addition, the muzzleloading rifle or musket must be:
•   Capable of being loaded only from the muzzle.
•   Equipped with only open or peep sights. Scopes and any electronics are prohibited. Except hunters with a visual disability may apply for a permit to use nonmagnifying scopes. (Applications are available at Fish and Game offices).
•   Loaded only with loose black powder, loose Pyrodex, or other loose synthetic black powder. Pelletized powders are prohibited.
•   Equipped with a single or double-barrel.
•   Loaded with a projectile that is within .010 inch of the bore diameter. Sabots are prohibited.
•   Loaded with a patched round ball or conical non-jacketed projectile comprised wholly of lead or lead alloy.
•   Equipped only with a flint, percussion cap or musket cap. 209 primers are prohibited.
•   Equipped with an ignition system in which any portion of the cap is exposed or visible when the weapon is cocked and ready to fire.

    The last two rules have got'cha.  Must be a percussion cap, flint, or musket cap rules out the 25acp breech plug with small rifle primer and visible ignition rules out the Encore entirely.....Sorry :(   
    On the plus side....shooting an old side lock percussion rifle IS a lot of fun!

I have an older TC inline I got for one of the kids years ago that has a musket cap that is exposed when ready to shoot it, so you don't have to have a side hammer.  But Hopalong is right, the sidehammers are more fun.  I love the feeling of the stuff floating back into your face on a cold morning, and the rotten egg smell of the black powder.  It has it all: noise, smoke, embers, smell, kick.  What more could you want?

    Our season opens here in Virginia tomorrow morning, if we keep talking it up I might have to let the Encore sit and get out an old Hawken or my little White Mountain Carbine...hmm.....maybe even some real black.....hmmmmm  ::)
