Rem 722 in 244 cal?
« on: October 17, 2009, 01:59:43 AM »
I heard a fellow talking about Rem making a 722 in 244 cal. I thought the 722 was only factory chambered in 257 & 222. Any thoughts.

The .244 Remington as originally introduced in the M722 platform.  Big mistake.  The .243 Winchester was chambered in the sexy M70, while the M722 was as ugly as a tugboat - guess which one sold far better?  The twist rate fiasco is well know and is the reason the .244 is no longer chambered but the 6mm Remington is.

The M722 was chambered to the following:

.222 Remington
.222 Remington Magnum
.243 WCF
.244 Remington
.257 Roberts
.300 Savage
.308 WCF

.

bubba- he meant they renamed it due to the bad press the .244 got.
I have it on good authority that the telepromter is writing a stern letter.

Yeah well yes and no. Cartridge yes but rifle not exactly. The .244 came first and with wrong twist for longer and heavier bullets so they renamed it to 6MM and changed the twist specification to allow it to stablilize longer and heavier bullets. So yeah the same brass is used but rifles chambered to them aren't quite the same since the twist rate is different and the older ones don't do so well with 100 and 105 grain bullets.
