concealment holster for sp101??
« on: August 02, 2009, 02:20:55 PM »
i have a ruger sp101 357magnum, 3inch barrel. i have decided to get my conceal carry permit, what would be a good choice? i am on a strick budget so i need something that will work but be inexspensive. i have been open carrying without trouble here in ky., but i think i would feel more comfortable when i go to town if i concealed. i have lived here all my life and from time to time, there will be someone open carrying in town. the police don't even bother cause they know its legal, when i went to town the first time they checked me out to make sure i was ok(not drunk, and ran a background check to be sure i could legaly own and carry the gun) when i passed, they said they would make a note so i wouldn't be bothered again. now i go just about everywhere, but i would like to get my conceal carry permit. thanks for any help.

About the least expensive would be Uncle Mike's, or Gun Mate (slightly cheaper promo line of Uncle Mike's).

They have a few styles of nylon holsters to fit the SP 101.  Some might be listed for the 2" barrel, but if it's an open end design the 3" will work in it.

Those are the cheapest.  I have had trouble with the plastic clips riding out of my belt.  Had to constantly be checking it and my gun actually fell out one day when I had both hands full of groceries I quit using it after that and will not by another one.

Check out a local gun show.  They usually have nylon type holsters there for a good price that have a metal clip.  But after trying several different holsters for my guns I do like the leather ones the best.  Take a look at the Bianchi 100 Professional for the 3 in s&W j frame it will fit the ruger sp101 as well runs about 40 dollars but is a nice holster.  Don't forget the belt.  Get a good belt.

Don't cheap out too much or you'll end with with a cheap (as in quality) holster.   The better the holster, the better the fit and function you'll end up with.  I tried a few different makes/models for my SP101 before finding what I really liked, a Mitch Rosen "Workman".  MUCH better than the Uncle Mikes fodder I tried and the Bianchi Acumold I tried and hated.  Do yourself a favor, save a little more and get a GOOD holster and a GOOD belt.   You wouldn't put tires from Discount Tire for your Ferarri and then park it in a leaky shack, right?

Crossbreed Supertuck. not the cheapest in the world but by far the best that I have tryed(9 holsters so far). This thing gives you the option to tuck your shirt into your pants and still be concealed. I take my 2 1/16" barreled sp101 almost everywhere. its a great buy. check them out.

There is cheap and then there is inexpensive . Try DON HUME best value i have found on a budget . I like the IWB , easy on stays put when you draw . Its leather and light , had a metal clip for your belt . Its not expensive last one i got was in the $30.00 plus shipping range i think .

Jump, thanks for the link to the super truck. Looks very good. I carry my 101 a little and have used a DeSantis IWB but it goes flat when the gun comes out and is a little hard to reholster. Also once when I was carrying a back pack the gun really beat up my hip for lack of padding and wt displacement. The DeSantis has been ok but I've been looking for better. When its cold  or I'm in the field I have used the Bianchi Accumold under a heavy coat. I like that except for getting it on and off my belt.  I check out the super truck more and the Hume too. Thanks.

I have a triple K  # 420 for my sp101 and I think it was about 30 bucks.  It's a very well made leather holster for strongside straight draw or weak side cross draw.  I'd get another if I had another pistol

The size 0 Uncle Mike's Sidekick Hip Holster fits "2 to 3 in small to medium frame revolvers". It is a perfect fit for my 3" SP101. They are available for less than $20 bucks at many online vendors. It is not just a floppy nylon gun-shaped bag; it is made with a laminate material that is quite strong and rigid. I rides high enough that a jacket covers it nicely. I don't like their IWB holster, which collapses when you draw the gun, and the thumb break model costs quite a bit more. BUT... I have several of the Sidekick Hip holsters for different guns, and I like them all.

I don't care for the Rosen and the Bianchi prints bad. I have a Simply Rugged for a GP100 and would not classify it as a concealment rig but it is a fine holster and I use it for woodsbumming when I take the GP. The absolute best concealment holster I have used for the SP is the Don Hume H721OT. I have two one in brown and one in black. the black normaly stays on my Aerostich riding pants for when I am on the bike. The are comfy and do not print.
Yes, I know it's cocked, It's got bullets too.

for the most part the police in the state know the law and won't say anything, but there is that rare occasion every now and then. when i went to ask about how much my permit would cost, the sheriff said just open carry till you get the money. he said it was legal in public, and any private place not posted. he went on to say that you can open carry in area's that can't conceal. i do get a few looks from time to time but never a problem so far. one lady ask me at wal-mart one day if i had a permit i told her i didn't need one it was legal as long as the gun was visable, she ask why i carry?, i said cause you never know whats going to happen and the police may not be close. she said yes you never know, then told me to be carefull and have a good day. nice lady wished all were like her.
