Bought My First Elect Call
« on: September 03, 2006, 11:50:35 AM »
After 34yrs I have finally purchased my first elect call. Haven’t messed with it much yet but know that it calls in sales people and customers just fine  :D :D

This Johnny Stewart call cost $34.00 and is probably avalible in a store near you. It cost me $19.00 as I had a gift certif.
I like some of these sounds which made it worth the purchase price of this pre-programmed digital. The remote control is alleged to be good for 150ft, and farther depending on how much brush is in the way. The sound is continuous but has a stop sound button which is a nice feature. The speaker head will pivot so you can point the thing away from you. The Volume is abit on the anemic side but this unit has an external speaker jack that caught my attention.

A trip to Radio Shack for
part #277-1008 (mini audio amplifier speaker)
part #42-2387 (6’ patch cord with 1/8 stero plugs on each end)
along with another speaker will take care of the volume problem which really is not too bad to begin with.

The new speaker & amp will be housed in something as simple as one of those large plastic coffee cups with the cord running to the base of the caller.
These setups are reputed to have as good or better sound that the high dollar calls.

You Can Make Your Own elect call if you have one of the portable mp3 players and do the above.
I might have tried this but do not own the mp3 & sure couldn’t get one for the price I paid for the Johnny Stewart.
Your MP3 will be much more versitile as you can download the full variety of the digital sounds.
(Credits to SDHandgunner on making your own) (I will try & find the post for your reference)

That's the problem with all those little callers, no volume. You don't always need alot of volume though and I'm sure that little JS caller well work just fine for you.

After 34 years don't you think it's about time? lol. ;)

34years ago I wanted that $175. Johnny Stewart so bad I could taste it. That price at that time seemed like $400 today so I learned with the mouth calls and never looked back.

I would agree that it is about time considering the wide range of digital calls that are avalible.
I am good, but just cant duplicate those sounds with even an open reed with the exception of a good bird in distress.

Well gezzz, I've been there and done that myself. Did hand calls for years then switched over to e-callers. When you get older them e-callers are the way to go, they have so many advantages over hand calls....But hand calls have there place in the world of predator calling. Hell, don't listen to me, I'm just an old fart that don't know nothing lol. ;)

Glanceblamm,

Congratulations on your new toy, Now you can say you are a real Predator hunter with the new J.S. caller...Grin.
Some times they are real handy. I forget to take mine with me half the time, Being absent minded as i am i might forget my shooter. One of the things i have found is if its possible have some thing for eye candy like i have a wobbling gidahoosit that rotates on a stick and it sure catches their attention, Another trick is to kill a Jack Rabbit on the way to your stand and place it to where the Coyote/Fox/Cat or what ever is in the area can see and smell it will get their mind off of you. When i lived down in the southern part of this state i would kill as many jacks as i could and tie them to the trailer hitch and drag them to the end of the road and start calling coming back out and you would be surprised at the difference it made. Like i said at the beginning " Good luck friend "...............Joe............. ::)

I sure can see the part about forgetting to take it. I may be in a hurry and consider it exess baggage even.
I may not even be the first to test it. May loan it to a friend and or 2 diff son-in-laws.
They are good hunters but I dont think this unit will make them real predator hunters.
Too many variables as you know. I will have to threaten to beat knots in their heads if they spook the quarry via doing something stupid despite my good & carefull instruction. :o ;D

I saw that unit advertised..but couldn't figure the battery system.
Seems like htere are some AA batteries but what is that other one ?

I'm rather shy about buying a caller..and then finding I will have to pay more for replacement batteries that I paid for the call in the first place..

The base has the AA's like you said and the remote has a small cylinder battery called a
23A 12v

These 23A 12v are the same type that my Chamberland (sears) garage door remotes use.
I had recently purchased some of these (two per package) for around $2.50 to replace the originals which were at least 8yrs old.

I dont know what the longivity of the AA's in the base will be but as a digital unit they would probably last a season, or may be even two years easily. Might have to go with the rechargable nicads with the amp in place though.

FYI
Just got back from Walmart they have these on sale for $17 for that kind of money how can you go wrong, Limited volume but could be used once there in closer so as not to attract attention to yourself.

You can also scroll to the bottom, or top of this forum to select pages.
Go to Page 3 & see the post Homemade Elect Caller by SD handgunner for more.
You can also see a post by myself titled Western Rivers Downloads if you have an MP3

It really doesnt take alot. an MP3 player can work great, I bought a cheap-o caller but an external amp & speaker can make a big difference. Son-in-Law is having great fun with mine right now. Has had very good luck on his grandfathers place near the ILL river.
I dont think that he is going to give it back to me but I really wasnt that partial to it as I really do like the mouth calls & the open reeds.
