Ballistics/trajectory Question
« on: December 31, 2009, 05:15:42 AM »
I'm using a .50 caliber Huntsman with a 24" barrel.  Two 50 gr Pyrodex pellets and a 295 Grain, hollow point, copper, Powerbelt.  At 50 yards I'm 3" high.  At 75 yards I'm also 3" high.  Does this sound right?

How would you recommend I sight in keeping in mind that I don't plan to shoot (deer) more than 125 yards?  Are there any online resources you could recommend?

Sounds right to me, IF the apex of your trajectory is between 65 and 70 yards. While your trajectory will remain constant, the height of your sighting plane from the barrel will play a big part in it's course. Are you shooting open sights, or do you have a scope mounted high above the bore? Where is it at 100 yards and 125 yards?

You should be just about right out to 125 yards, maybe still an inch high at 100, and a couple low at 125? The only way to know for sure, is to shoot at those ranges.

There are all kinds of ballistic charts and calculators that MAY get you close. The only one I have found that is right every time is shooting at the ranges with the components you want to use. Anything less is just a GUESS!

I'm using a scope.  It's not real high, no see-thru rings or anything like that.  I've never shot it beyond 75 yards.  Thanks for the input.
