I would like to try a moose hunt in Canada next year. Can anyone tell how a US citizen can hunt moose in Canada ? Is it a lottery or what.

Thanks

In Ontario, as a non-resident, you must hunt through an outfitter.  Outfitters have an allocation of adult tags (otherwise a licence is only good for calves), so in order to discover if one is available, you'd have to contact the outfitter.

In Quebec, licences are available over the counter, and they are valid for any animal, but it requires two (I believe) to validate an animal.  This means if two of you are hunting, and one drops a moose, both must use their tags and stop hunting.  There are also restrictions as to where you may hunt and there can be additional ZEC fees to hunt these areas.

In Newfoundland, you must hunt with an outfitter, its one animal per hunter, and you are almost guaranteed success.  You can also combine your hunt with one for woodland caribou.

New Brunswick has a draw system, and the chances of success (in the draw) are very small.

I don't know much about the western provinces except that their moose are larger.

In B.C. non-residents must hunt with a licensed guide. I believe guides have an allotment but in most places it's probably generous especially as you travel further North.

There is a ferry service out to The Rock (Newfoundland), so that may still be within your range.

Rumour (and that's all it is, I have no facts) has it that they are not going to allow you to bring your meat home.
Best check your US customs for the true story. Has to do with the stupid mad cow fiasco.

Cabin4,

I'd definitely recommend taking a trip to my neck of the woods here in Newfoundland, or as we call it, The Rock. There are tons of outfitters (not real happy about that, because some of my favorite hunting areas have been ruined) lots of Moose and most offer complimentary rabbit/grouse/partridge hunting if you tag out early. If you have some extra cash, there is some world class Caribou and Black Bear hunting to be had as well. You better bring a good pair of rubber boots and rain gear. Forget hunting in those fancy 9" gore tex Rocky, Cabela's, Irish Setter, etc... You are going to be tramping through bogs, (mashes, as we call them), over barrens (granite covered in blue berry bushes, sheep laurel, ground juinper and caribou moss - bitch to walk over) and/or hunting "cut overs" where Moose love to munch on young birch and evergreens that have grown up since the area was logged. A good pair of water proof binoculars is also recommended. Rifle wise, something in the .30-06 class is ideal. Most of us locals don't bother with the super duper magnums, in fact, most use sporterized Lee-Enfield .303s! If you're interested, I can dig out some web sites/phone number for you to call. X-man...

Just returned from Newfoundland. Party of 3 all shot bulls. OUTSTANDING EXPERIENCE! We hunted with Paty & Sons from River of Ponds. First time and was totally pleased. We all had different goals and all three got exactly what we were looking for. One shot a trophy, 50" 18 point, another shot a fine 10 point 38" with heavy beams and good palms, I shot a 5 point with a 28" spread, and have been enjoying the best wild game I've ever tasted for the last week and will be until all 198lbs are consumed!
Quality experience all around, saw in excess of 30 moose including bulls, cows and calfs. Numerous caribou...Can't say enough about the quality of the hunt. Not a turkey shoot...Tough walking and hiking, no altitude but the black spruce is waist deep and THICK!
PA is one of his strongest markets and there were several there so you should be able to get some good references.
Follow all the instructions, make sure all the forms are properly filled out and clearing customs both ways is not a problem.
Good luck!
