Cheese , You are correct about the shoulder but for ease of resizing the rim makes it easier IE if you move the shoulder back a bit the round will headspace on the rim and fire . I shot contenders for many years and always used a rimmed case if possible .

I hand load 223 Remington, 243 Winchester, and 7mm-08 Remington for my Encore and have zero problems with headspacing.

If hand loaded correctly, there is no reason to choose rimmed over rimless.

That is true , with the Contender you can be in spec. by the book and still have problems with the bolts in the gun BEEN THERE . There is more wiggle room with a rimmed case . I loaded for the encore - 204 , 708 and 300 win mag. For the Contender - 223 , 357 herret , 7X30 waters , 30-30, 357mag,357max 45 colt , 44mag 7TCU , and others for friends .

 I read through the post and you keep saying Drop too Hard to track
So given that you are hunting thick brush your shots must be short
If I'm correct the 44 you speak of is all you need its a fat hard hitter and deadly
Especially if your at short distance's

Keep a Box hidden in what ever vehicle you use to hunt and forget about it
If you leave and forget your ammo you have the hidden box
