did a lot of shooting this weekend and today
« on: October 20, 2009, 09:40:53 AM »
I did a lot of shooting this weekend and today getting ready for the upcoming deer season.
Checked my Traditions BP and as always it's dead on the money.
100gr loose Clean Shot behind a 200gr Shockwave with Kleenbore primers, cutting holes at 100.
I Love that gun!

Also sighted in my new 50 cal Pro Hunter barrel.
Three 777 pellets and win 209 primers with 250gr shockwaves.
Little more kick than the Traditions but not to bad.
Can't shoot with the Traditions though.
Three shots about 1 to 1.5".
Good enought.

Next came the Huntsmans turn.
100 gr loose Clear Shot behind a 250gr Shockwave with Win 209 primers.
This has the new breach plug installed with the O ring.
Primers were hard to get out.
I think I need to open it up a little.
Three shots about the same as the Pro Hunter. Not to bad.
All barrels were dry patched after each shot.
I guess I am all set for BP now.

Now for the rifles.

Checked my sons 7x57, needed just a little tweaking.
Was shooting a little high.
Factory Remingtom 140gr corelocks.
Fine now.

I used my Pro Chrono on the rest of these.

Next was my Win model 70 in 270 WSM. Fine as always!!!
Three shots under a dime with factory Win Supream 130gr Balistic Tips.
AMV was 3259 fps.

The 45-70 BC was next.
300gr factory Win HPs.
Had some trouble with this one two years ago and put it up.
Didn't get around to working with it untill today.
Was shooting a little high and left.
On target now with three shots under a quarter with two in the same hole.
AMV was 1893 fps.

45-70 Handis turn.
Dead on the money with same ammo.
Looked like I was shooting the same gun.
Three shots under a quarter with two cutting.
AMV was 1829 fps.
I would have thought there would have been a little more difference than that, speed wise.

Tried my 45 colt BC with open sights at 50yds.
Not bad for my eyes.
Three shots about 3/4" with a 255gr LSWC over 12.5gr of HS6.
AMV was 1246.

Also tried my 454.
Open sights at 50yds.
Three shots under 1/2" WOW!
32gr 1680 behind a Hornaday 300gr BT SST ML bullet.
AMV was 1652 fps.
Might just have to scope this one and move it on out a ways!

Last I swaped scopes on one of my 204s.
Went from a 4x12 to a 6.5x20.
Factory Hornaday 32gr V-MAX.
Five shots under a dime with ease.
AMV was 3968 fps.
Super little cartridge.

All said & done I was pleased with all the guns.
I think I need a couple of ADVIL.
That 45-70 BC butt plate has got to go!   >:(

Bad part is there is still so many more to try!!!  :-\ ;) :D

It sure is relaxing going to the range. You have to think about what you are doing not the bs that life is dishing by the shovelfull. Good shooting

I hear ya LONGTOM.  Went though 148 rounds of cartridges Sunday trying to get several sighted in after swapin' scopes and ammo.  Best way I know to get a case of the Flinchies short of doin it all with a steel butt plate.  Don't know why I change things around this close to hunting season startin'. ???  Seems I recall somthing about the same last year, and the year before. ::)  Always good to get out and shoot, think I'm ready, but not as good a groups as you.  Still, I think I'll make meat. ;)  DP

I was reading (here?) that the BC barrel adds about 400fps over the 22" barrel, but I guess 60+ fps is it?

It would probably make more difference with hotter loads.

But, good shooting, I wish I could burn so many shells. :D

Just useing up some of my 30 some years worth of gathering ammo.
No problem, there is plenty more in the cabinet.   ;)

I think this is about as far as I relly want to go until I get rid of that butt plate!   :-\

Hey Tyke:
While I have you here I want to ask yout thoughts.
I have another BC I have been talking about opening up to 120.
What I am after is to load it with BP and hopefully use a 300gr HP and be able to obtain 1800 to 1900 fps.
Sort of a factory ammo only with BP.
That is provided this BC likes the 300 as good as my first one.
What are your, or anyones thoughts on this?
Will it work?
Can I do it?

I don't see why not, you probably won't even lose much velocity with a 400 grain bullet and black powder.  It can only burn so fast.  Heck, you might approach 2000 fps with a 400 grain bullet and BP.

I don't know why you'd want to do so though, lots of brass and dies cost for something that can be done much easier.

The 45-70 can do that EASY.  The 45-120 can almost self propel a 300 grainer that fast with anything but BP.  8)

Of course, if you were curious as the real heavies and BP it could be interesting!

I wish I had a real heavy mold with a gascheck so I could see what the 45-120 can shoot through!

Just looking to duplacate factory 300s as they have done all I have asked them to do.
Really don't need all the buck & roar.
Just was wanting the thrill of shooting a BP cartridge gun, that's all.
If it shoots a little faster than factory then that will be ok also.

Good shooting Longtom, I wish my 45/70 (handi) and 204 (Ultra) would shoot that tight.  I was out yesterday and did not get those results.  I was able to get "Minute of deer" at 100 meters with the 45/70 and the 204 inside of 3" at 200 meters.  I have a few things to check.

Wife spotted a groundhog at the garden this morning.
Being close to other buildings and some new livestock trailers I took my Handi 17 mach 2 and went looking for him.
I did see him but not before he saw me.
No shot.
We both will be back I'm sure!   ;)

Afterwards I took it to the bench to check the zero and to play a little.
It has a 3x9x32 Bushnell and is sighted at 50yds.
Busted a few tomatos I had set on top of the target stand.
Nice spray with chunks everywhere.
Then I tried it on target.
Not to bad, 10 shots inside a quarter with Hornaday ammo.
Several cut holes.
It ain't perfect but it is minute of squirrels head.
Just wish my old shooting bench fit me better.
I built it back when I was in my 20s, over 20 some years ago.
I have to bend over to much and it's still not quite right.
At least that's what I keep telling myself when I just can't seem to keep the shots in the center.   ;D
