.243 accuracy potential
« on: October 15, 2009, 04:59:26 PM »
Am looking to send my receiver back for some more barrels. Was thinking about getting a .243 barrel. Anyone got one of the "R03844    *243 Win., 24" Bull, Fluted" which would normally be the fluted .243 barrel on an Ultra rifle?

My requirements are that it be accurate enough for 2" at 200 meters and 18" at 600 meters.

Thanks,

On this one I respectfully disagree.
The "Ultra" 24" BB 243's.. when treated right.. can show some awesome results. Mac's did, and which I believe Mitch now has it , shot in the .2's if I am not mistaken..though I have to admit this is not a normal thing, but shows the potential they have when treated correctly and have a tight lock up and fit.

OK, what should I expect from such a barrel? Please fill in the blanks.

At 200 meters I should expect _______ " groups.

At 600 meters I should expect _______ " groups.

Can't help ya with anything beyond 100yds, that's all I've shot with my 243 Ultra, but I'd expect it to at least shoot moa with the right load and shooting technique, it will likely require the forend to be bedded tho which isn't hard.

Cheap gun, at least 3 barrel configs, no guarantees. The .243 is not known to be accurate, but mine is the exception. Under 1" at 100 yards with ceetain loads. Under 2" at 100 yards with most loads. I consider that pretty good for a .243 Handi.

My 243 shoots pretty good once the barrel was broken in, maybe after a 100 rounds
I once shot about 3 inch groups prone in 15-25mph cross winds at 205 yards
Probably could of tighten it up some in less wind. I don’t know about 600 meters
That’s longer than I’m able to shoot, but would like to try 400 yards at the range
It’s just an off the shelf rifle and shoots the factory Federal loads well-the cheaper stuff
It didn’t like shooting Remington Corelocks! I believe the federals are a little longer
Also it likes a dirty bore, so if it’s clean I take a couple of shots, then it’s ready to go!
