Graybeard, forgive me if this is inappropriate but I just purchased one of this seller's barrel removal tools and it is second to none. An excelent value for the money and I just wanted to let DW owners here know.

Well, I'm that "guy" that's selling those wrenches on Gunbroker! Thanks so much for the kind words! I just found out about this forum from another guy that made a purchase from me. I'm a huge Dan Wesson fan that's into making stuff...since I'm supposed to be a "real business", I wanna get a feel for things around here, and not come off like an advertising robot. Hopefully more to come later, and I'll be able to add something to the discussion! :)

I directed Eric here, I bought his tools and will post my thoughts on them once they arrive. The idea is a sound one, and he is a very nice guy to deal with. Hopefully this will allow us DW fans to have another source for tools.

Got them in today.  :o
They look and work great, and what a innovative change to the original design. Less expensive than the ones from CZ/DW and interchangeable pilots to boot. The pilots screw in and out finger tight and are made of some plastic/polymer, no scratching the bore here. They appear to be tough although I don't know what metal they are made of or if they are heat treated, maybe Eric can fill that in for us. If I had to find a negative thing to say it could only be that the pilots are not marked. Not that it is hard to tell which goes where, on the small frame I have .22, .30/.32, and .35 and on the large frame .41, .44, and .45 (the factory ones are not marked either I should also say). The cross piece does not travel back and forth which could mean you cannot crank on it really hard, but to be honest I don't like the factory ones that travel, every time I go to remove a tight lock nut, the damn thing slips and gouges on one side of my hand, so I like the fact they are solid in there. You would think, with the interchangeable barrels DW would have offered an interchangeable pilot as well....Glad Eric picked up where they left off.  ;D

You are quite welcome Eric. I always thought DW lacked some quality in their barrel tools and you filled that gap nicely.

Thanks for the review Ron, I appreciate it! The main bodies of the wrenches are made out of 4140 MOD which is an alloy steel that's been heat treated before machining. Great stuff, regular CRS is not good enough for this application...yes, that cross piece/handle is purposely fixed...like you say, if you just have pressure on the one side of the handle it has a tendency to want to slip...

The correct way to use these wrenches is to hold it in you right hand to tighten and your left hand to loosen the nut. Use your thumb to apply pressure to the handle as you also apply downward pressure. That's the best way I've found to use them, there may be other ways. :D

Yes, marking the pilots would be nice, but I haven't figured out a good and cost effective way...aside from a 40K laser!

Thanks again for the kind words, it is interesting why DW didn't make their wrenches as nice as their guns...the wrenches I'm have now are just the "entry level" wrenches...there's one in the works and I hope to have soon that's gonna be the "deluxe class" one! Gonna be more expensive but IMO very much worth it...still planning on offering the ones I have now...

DW seemed to go from bad to worse with their wrenches as the last was the Door knob that was almost useless on a tight nut.  I saw some at a gun show where they had machined the doorknobs to a thick T, but they wanted $125 for these wrenches, they had about 4 and they weren't selling. but they wouldn't bargain, so they probably still have them.  Glad to see an improved aftermarket at a reasonable cost.

Interesting, for $125 all they did was machine down the door knob wrenches? I would think they would have been kind of hard to grasp like that, though one would have more leverage on tight nuts like you say...
