I hate to ask this but

Since Tim mentioned the BMG in another post, has anyone tried a 50 BMG in a Handi? :o

Not a BMG, but a much small case head with the 300WSM which had too much breech thrust even at 150gr 30-06 velocities, when 3000fps was approached, the action flexed creating a gap at the top of the barrel and breech face, I think if the frame was changed to provide support closer to the latch or they used a larger diameter pin and a more robust latch, belted magnums would be a possibility, but as it is, anything much bigger that what's factory chambered now isn't possible.

I'd like to see someone hang onto a 50BMG Handi Rifle. :D :o

On second though... Tyler might be able to hande it ;D ;D

How bad was the recoil on it?

The only 50 BMG I've ever been behind was "Ma Deuce" and it was turret mounted. ;)

Well....let's put it this way. I've built two rifles that I just dread shooting. One is a Spanish Mauser in .308 that I milled every spare scrap of steel off of, then made a skelatonized aluminum stock and the butt width is 3/4". It is a joy to carry on my mountain bike (before my knees finally went south) but was like shooting a meat clever....the other was the AR which was worse.

Kind of...

I have one of the lug gun barrels at a friend house now so we can use his lathe to chamber it for the 12FH when the reamer gets here. The FH i just a BMG case blown out straight, the head turned and threaded for a screw on 12 ga rim.

The Handi's don't have any trouble handling it so I occurred to me, someone may be using
a 500 barrel with down loaded BMG'.

The pressure isn't an issue but I wasn't sure about flex. The TC's can't stand it either.

yep  i  just  did
it  went right into  the 12gage chamber like  it was meant for it
it  was  too scary  to even  close the action

maybe we ought  to just  leave  one  out loaded that way
encase  we get  robbed........let  them  drop the hammer

a safer bet would be to  ream it to a  500 MAX  as if 500mag  is  not  too much already
wont  be long  now  till some one does
when drugs are outlawed only out laws will have drugs
DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO STOP A DEMOCRAT
OBAMACARE....the biggest tax hike in the  history of mankind
free choice and equality  can't co-exist
AFTER THE LIBYAN COVER-UP... remind any  democrat voters ''they sat and  watched them die''...they  told help to ''stand down''

Pressure isn't the only factor, case head size and pressure are the determining factors concerning frame strength, the larger the case head, the lower the pressure needs to be on an H&R frame, see bolt thrust on the Lilja site. The 500S&W has an operating pressure of over 50kpsi (SAAMI MAP 60kpsi, but the highest data I've seen is ~52kpsi) and an inside case head diameter of ~.501", that calculates to over 9800lbs of breech thrust, that's likely the safe limit of the SB2 rifle frame, the SB2 shotgun frame is likely less due to the thinner frame rail tops.

That' entirely correct Tim and the reason the Handi's handle the FH well. The FH's are in the 25K region with Handi loadings. A BMG could be light loaded (Boy that's an oxymoron) to that level but that's one of those guns you would have to make sure no one ever accidentally fired a full house load in.

The only real reason I can think of to do this is for braggin rights. ;D

As Spanky suggested, you could get Tyler to field test it, he's our resident recoil junky!! ;D ;D ;D  I was gonna send him some more 720gr .458" Ranger Rick's for his 45-120 BC, but I was afraid he'd hurt himself shooting them at 1800-2000fps.  :o
