BP Pistol

Hi Everyone:
Let me start by saying I really like this forum, and that I am a happy Encore owner and hunter.  I own these barrels (1.) 243 Bl 15" (2.) 209X50 Bl 15" (3.) 45/410 Bl 15" (4.) 30-06 Bl 15" with recoil arrestor (5.) 22 Hornet Bl 15". I bought them all new one at a time as I could afford them. The versitility of this gun continues to delight me.  I don't know why but here in Va. the law says I can't hunt deer during BP season with a "Muzzle Loading Pistol" Man I read everything I could find and talked to all the "Official Types" I could reach and their position is the same, it is a pistol. What a bummer, They tell me a legal Muzzle loader must have a barrel >9.5" with cal =>45 cal and be loaded with a min of 50 gr BP or equiv all said it must develope a min of 350 Ft-Lbs energy.  My BP barrel is 15" loaded with 90 gr FFFG powder a 50 cal 180 gr ball and developes 1090 Ft-Lbs. So my gun excedes all the min requirements yet still this a pistol and therefore illegal it seems. I want to get the 209X45 Bl 26" black powder barrel and butt stock.  to beat this  problem. Not a pistol but best I can think of.  What do you all think??

Just get a rifle stock and use the 15" muzzleloader barrel. Since it is a muzzleloader you can install THIS barrel and still be legal.

Years ago it was legal in VA to hunt deer in blackpowder season with a pistol , as long as the pistol met the same requirements as the rifle...ie...caliber...muzzle energy..etc.  At that time, the only pistol available, to my knowledge, that met the requirements was the TC Scout.  Which pistol I had and used with great success, and still love to shoot.  About 10 years + or - , the regs were rewritten and changed from"muzzle loading weapon" to read "muzzle loading rifle"  This effectively elimanated BP Pistol hunting.  i enquired with the game commision about the change and was told that it was not done intentionally to elimanate pistol hunting.  I was also told that no one had ever asked about BP pistol hunting and that upon request, they saw no reason why the change couldn't be reversed.  I MADE SAID REQUEST.  They told me that the regs were written or changed every two years and it would come up then.  My request was either lost or denied, I never heard.  About this time I went thru divorce, job change and moved residence and a whole lot of stuff got pushed aside unfortunately.  I,ve never checked on it since.  Sorry to say I can't remember indivdual I talked with, but it was somebody at the Richmond level.  I,d bet we could mount considerable support to change this now if we all got together.  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt   :D

I agree witH Jeff. I use this arrangement to hunt in Kentucky. Makes for a nicely compact and potent gun.
The only downside to this configuration is the lack of a sling swivel on the pistol forearm.
I recommend using Barnes expander m/z's. They will expand relyably at a very wide range of velocities with 100% weight retention. (and I'm not just reciting what Barnes claims)
I speak from experiance with my own testing.
