You a very right, but I have done the pass thing early before and it bit me in the azz. Matter of fact that year I got absolutely nothing, I passed on a small rack 8 about like this one. So from now on if it is at least more than a forky with a decent body I put it in my kids tummies. Ya I will be pizzed come rut Mr. Big comes along, I won't get as much meat from Mr. Big when I get him. Yes I said it I can get as many bucks a year as I want VIA CHEVROLET
. I hunt for the passion not for macho manliness. My heart was racing just as fast when I shot him as when I shot my Pope and Young record book last year 186 inches. Believe it or not a minute maybe two before I shot him I had a really tall spike on one side, tall fork on the other under me and he had my heart racing.
I didn't want to shoot him so I was glad when he winded me a headed for Z hills. Then the other stepped out and I could see there were two so I waited to see if the one behind him was a bigger rack. When the one in back stepped out and only had a nub on one side and half to one inch spike on the other to me the choice was clear.
I bought that bow the day I buried my dad last year December 5th 2008. I bought it because I always wanted a Mathews, and my dad had always said one day son, to me that day had come. So to me whenever I have that bow in my hand my dad is with me. I had no intention what so ever of going hunting last night. The weather was misty rainy just all together sucky. I was not going, then about 2:45 something said you are hunting tonight PERIOD. I have a really trust worthy gut always have had, but never has it smacked me in the face like it did last night. My wife was walking in the door when I was walking out with bow in hand. She asked me are you crazy you're going to soak a brand new bow. I said honey keep the phone close by tonight, and walked out the door. One hour later she answered the phone, and said to nasty isn't it; coming home? I said ya it is really wet just as soon as I get this buck in the back of the truck I will be there. She said no way really, well to all who have bow hunted you know how it goes.
It was going to be a cold day in the well before I allowed the first year of mine and my dad's new bow to go without blood drawn first blood so to speak. Yes I do love nothing more than to drop a bruiser of a buck but like I said " very, very, chewy ", and the chances of me ever getting a bigger buck than the one I got last year unless I go to a farm or Ontario are slim to none. I refuse to go to a farm hunt might as well go to the zoo. This doesn't mean I won't still try but I am not passing up renewable resources in hope's it will happen. The Pope and Young measuring guy plus many others have come to see my buck from 2008, and they have all said hope you don't get disappointed and quit. I asked why, they all said it could happen not saying it won't but he is probably your Trophy. Well little do they know, to me they are all trophy's yes doe's included when harvested with a bow.
Anyone can shoot one 2, 3, 4 hundred yards away drinking coffee and reading the paper, get them to where you can smell them that's hunting true fair chase. My big one was 10 yards away when I stuck him at one point I could have reached down and grabbed his antlers.
To the brotherhood of the hunt, I hope your game be plentiful and your harvest be fruitful. In other words go kick white tail azz.
