444 marlin h4198 loads wanted
« on: October 26, 2009, 05:00:43 PM »
Just lookin' fer some load data, and can't find what I want so I'm askin' the experts.  I know xtp's act a little different than some other bullets, but I like the potential of the 300gr. xtp. I have a full can of h4198 and would like to use this combination for a relatively fast(for bullet weight) SAFE load I can use in a handi rifle. I would also like to crimp out on the groove furthest from the nose of the bullet if this wouldent cause high pressures. I'm also open to any other suggestions. purpose of load is for a big deer smasher that is effective at longer distances as well as close up, and the least amount of tracking possible. don't know if I trust leverevolution bullets for reliable expansion, and find them hard to seat without damaging tips. dont want to rework dies in any way for that. Thanks in advance for any info.

Hodgdon has H4198 data for a 300gr bullet, I use H4198 in my Handi with the 240gr XTP and 265gr FP. I have the 265gr FTX, but haven't shot any yet, but the Hornady New Dimension seater die will work fine with the FTX. I crimp all my loads with the Lee factory crimp die. haven't hunted with the .444 yet though, but there are a few kill reports in the H&R forum to check out.

The current load I'm using in my 444 with the 300 gr XTP is 42.5 gr of H-4198.  It chronographs at 2055 fps out of my 22" barreled Marlin 444SS.  It's a good, accurate, hard hitting load. You might be able to go to 44.0 grs, but I'd start lower and work up.

I also like the Speer 270 gr Gold Dot over 46.5 gr of H-4198 for 2205 fps.
The older I get...The better I was.

I have had great luck with H-335 and the 265 FTX. I know that doesn't answer the question but it is at least some 444 info for you to consider.
