CWP for Pellet Pistol?

My wife wants me to get her a pellet pistol, as there are dogs that sometimes attack our small dog when she goes for a walk. She currently carrys a knife. Daisy has a smaller Co2 008 model that gets 480 FPS for pellets or BB's.

Would this require a concealed weapons permit? It appears some states require them for pellets, but not BB's. We live in Washington State, King County.

Once I had a big German Shepherd dog chase me when I rode my bicycle past the house, in a residential neighborhood.
Rode by again after I cocked the air pistol, dog ran up snarling, one shot and dog ran back.  Never came off the porch to chase me again!

I knew a guy that killed a dog once w/ a knife.  Dog chomped down on his arm, wouldn't let go.

A pellet pistol might scare a dog away, but it might enrage it too, and it is way too underpowered to stop it if it did enrage it into attacking.

If you dont want to kill the dog, I would use pepper spray.  It works really good on dogs.  Especailly if you got the bigger Bear models that spray up to 15 feet.  I think cabelas and bass pro might have them.

A walking cane is actually what I use.  It looks innocent, and if you wind up, you can really break something if you hit with it.  Plus it helps to walk using it too. especially when you have to get up off a knee.

If you want to use a pellet pistol, I would get the little Co2 version of the PPK.  It shoots bbs up to 400 fps and it is semi automatic, so you can blast away with one hand while you hold your dog or cane with the other hand.

But truthfully, if there is a dog that actually attacks you when you go for a walk.  Get a pistol permit, and a .357

Dont go looking for trouble, go for your walk, mind your own business and obey all your local laws.  But if you get attacked by a dog, any kid in your neighborhood could get attacked too, and it would be prudent to stop it permanently.  Vicious dogs should be leashed and not loose.

MAKE SURE you check ALL your local ordinances about firearms. 

You might find that you would actually get in more trouble shooting a dog with a pellet causing an injury, than killing it to protect your life.

Before you did anything, make sure you report a loose vicious dog to the police, so there are existing prior police reports of a vicious loose dog before you have to defend yourself.

Maybe if the police go talk to the owners, they will keep it locked up and that will solve the issue in the best way.

I agree with deerhunter but would add that the single best nonlethal I have seen was thought up by a kid where I used to live.  A small supersoaker water pistol pumped to maximum and loaded with sudsy amonia.  Saw this kid pull the trick on two large pit bull/Staffordshire terriers from a block away and it only took one lesson.  Smart 9 year old girl.  Cops came out on animal cruelty charge to our court by owner of dogs.  Talked to people on our court and busted dog owner.

Thanks guys, I will get some pepper spray. My wife and I both love dogs, and most dogs in the neighborhood are not a problem. We live in a semi-rural area on acreage, occasionally there are some rogue dogs. I was chased by a couple of pit bulls a few years ago when jogging, and have carried a knife ever since. I suspect they attacked and bit others, as they were not seen shortly after and were probably taken away from animal control, which I had called. The county sheriff is understaffed and will not respond to animal attacks or petty vandalism in our area. Our house is well armed, and I will probably get a CWP just in case.

edit - to keep this on the forum topic of air guns, I did buy a Beeman .177/.22 interchangeable barrel rifle recently. It is great fun, and I will am teaching my two daughters gun safety on it, before letting them shoot .22LR. It seems to have a lot of power, I will have to get a chrono and check. I prefer the .22.

I grew up in an area where only law was Highway patrol, (remember Broderick Crawford?).  People dumped dogs and cats in our area because they thought it was the HUMANE thing to do.  It just left the people there the job of killing another mans dog.
If you get a chance pick up a garage sale tennis racket with steel strings, I have seen a dog walk through pepper spray (35 years a letter carrier) but never a tennis racket.  Most folks don't think of one as a weapon and if they do just reply your trying to get back your form.

BlindHari! That was great.  That tennis raquet trick reminded me of when I was a kid.  I grew up in a poor section of Boston, this was like 35 to 40 years ago.  We had just started playing Street Hockey, and a lot of the kids would sharpen the tops of their plastic hockey stick blades.  If I remember right, they were used for hooking.  Almost like carrying a scyckle! 

I dont know what would look funnier.....walking a little dog with a tennis raquet or a hockey stick! LOL!

Ok Deerhunter here goes my reasoning,
It's a lady walking a dog, less muscle mass and upper arm strength, unlike a knife a tennis racquet keeps any attacker (four or two leg) at an extra arms length, tennis racquet is made of high strength lighweight metal and strung with metal strings, secure grip built in, no concealed weapons permit, generally a canine will avoid something thrust at it that is bigger than its head, a tennis racquet traveling at max velocity from full arms length will have greater impact than a.22.  I carry a Gransfor Bruk axe in an over shoulder carry when I am out fourwheeling.  It is light and nonthreatning but can be thrown about 30 feet and sink 3/4" into black pine, up close it is a brutal weapon.  I would not throw a tennis racquet but they make over shoulder carries for them and up close it is a brutal weapon and that's where it's needed.  Last it will not injure anything beyond what you intend to the way a pistol could.

 I like some kind of a stick (for two or four legged problems), but other than a cane, they're frowned upon by the police where I live. If legal in your area, you might get your Wife a telescoping spring baton to carry in her purse...

 I wouldn't use a pellet/BB pistol for legal and safety reasons. Keep in mind that if your Wife were to wound an attacking dog with one, she might have to deal with the owner too; he's apt to be madder than his dog when he confronts your Wife, and might not be discouraged by a BB gun. Also, a jury might be more sympathetic toward his daughter's 'gentle family pet' than your 'gun totin' Wife.

 If your Wife really wants to carry some kind of projectile-shooter, you might fix her up with one of the small full auto electric airsoft guns...

 I had one of the above, and it worked wonders on stray cats, squirrels and racoons in the yard without injuring them. Might want to paint it orange so the cops know it's just a toy.

From my own experience, I can state with certainty, dogs and bullwhips do not get along.  I have chased dogs, and on one occasion, 2 pet wolves, off of my property just by cracking it a couple of times.

I have seen a whip 12' in use, it is an awesome and forgotten weapon.  I am not talking Indiana Jones, I am referring to a martial arts instructor I knew and his favorite hobby.

I just showed this thread to my wife and she thinks you guys are funnier than crap! Seriously, much of this was good advice and we will get a squirt bottle and fill it with ammonia. She could hide a small bullwhip discreetly in her pink handbag. I'm not sure if the axe over the shoulder would work, but I guess she could say shes out looking for firewood

In my case I had to use it.  Killed one of my neighbors 2 pit bulls on the street, with the meds that I take, (blood thinners), if that dog had got hold of my leg, I would have been dead.  And I did not go through all that chemo and radiation to let some dumb ass neighbor’s dog kill me in the street.   Even if they arrested and put me in jail.  Cost me two hundred bucks to get out.  Then I had to wait months for them to drop the charges!  Not a fun way to spend one’s time, looking at 2 to 5 years for animal cruelty.

I did not like shooting that dog, so now when ever I go out to even my mail box I carry a old golf club driver, with the head cut off.  I bought two old ones’ from Good Will and I only picked the ones’ with carbon fiber shafts.  They are light as feather, and as strong as steel.  One can use them just like a fencing foil.   

I still carry my gun, but I now carry a big stick too!

PS We do have a leash law here, and I have called Animal Control half a dozen times in the 20 years that I have lived here, they came out twice, the first time the guy told me that if the dog comes back that I should catch it for him, and the second time the put me in jail……   Our tax dollars at work!!!!!!
