7-30 Waters
« on: September 23, 2003, 10:37:22 AM »
I just got a 7-30 Waters barrel in a trade, it's 12 inches including the muzzle tamer. It came with a TC lobo 3x scope and 140 rounds of federal ammo.
What's this good for and what's it worth? I don't know anything about this caliber and  am thinking of putting it on the barrel trading page.

The 7x30 Waters is a great deer cartridge for the Contender.  If your barrel is 12 inches in total length including the brake then you basically have a 10 inch barrel with TC's brake. I'm not familar with the scope itself or the value of the barrel since I primarily use a falling block & bolt specialty handguns.  Of factory cartridges for the Contender with deer sized game in mind the 7x30 Waters would be my top choice.   I would check the classifieds and see what others have been selling this chambering/length for. If I were interested in a 7x30 Waters barrel from TC I would want the Super 14 (no brake).  But there are likely others who prefer the shorter length (less forward weight) and are recoil sensitive.

I have two barrels. I have the barrel like yours on a contender and a 14" 7-30 Custom with custom break. I took a nice 8 pnt buck with my hunter barrel last year w/Hornady 139grn SST bullets. It also shoots the factory Fed into about 1.5" at 100 yds. It fits my holster well and handles well from tree stands or the ground shooting from my sticks.
The 14" w/break was used for shooting silhouette for several years and won several titles. With 120grn Hornady SP's or 120 V-Max it is terror out to 200 yards. I took a deer with it also w/the 120 V-Max bullets. The break is a little loud but it was being shot about 100 times per match and it sure helped on the recoil.
It is one of my favorite rounds and I'm thinking about having one rechambered to a 7-30 Ackley Improved to increase the powder a grain or two and shoot light bullets for varmints like coyotes and stuff that I don't care about keeping the hides.

The 7-30 Waters is a fine caliber for whitetail and very accurate with handloads.  Getting 3/8 to 1/2 groups @ 100 yard is not uncommon with the 100 grain Hornady HPs and 139 grain Hornady SSTs I shoot.   I wouldnt' want a brake on the barrel but it might not be but so bad.  I would suggest shooting it before trading it.  You just might like it.

Hawkeye, I've also used the 139 SST to harvest a few deer.  I'm real pleased with this bullet.  Exactly how did it perform for you on that nice buck?

Blessings!

The Contender did the job. The buck came in to my grunt call about 0730. He stopped at 40 yds in a clearing and looked around. I put the scope on 2.5 as he was coming in and put the crosshairs right behind his leg. When I touched it off he bucked and ran about 10 yards and stopped, looking around. I knew I hadn't missed but I wasn't sure how he was hit. I chambered another round and as I lined the crosshairs up on his neck he fell. Double lung and tip of the heart. Exit wound was about quarter size.
He pretty much got the full velocity impact being that close. I shot a doe later in the season at 120 yds and she ran about 50 yds and fell. The exit wound was not as large but lots of damage inside.

Hawkeye,

Nice Buck!  Congrats!  Your results with the 139 grain Hornady SST out of the 730 Waters are similar to mine.  It does a fine job!

Blessings!

I too am a fan of the 7-30 in the 14"super.  At the time I used mine I did not reload so went with factory ammo.  No problem even so with 1.25" groups @ 100 yds.  Shot a 10 pt with it at 70 yds.  He ran about 40 yds and that was it.  It is one of my guns that I wish i had not traded off . . . life and learn

I've owned my 7-30 with 14" barrel for some time now, shoot postal matches with it in the Cast Bullet Assoc. and have hunted with it using cast bullet quit a few times. You won't find a better caliber to hunt deer with, shoots great, easy to reload for, not a wrist breaker last deer I shot was about 110 paces away, went down like it was hit by a truck. Keep the barrel you wont be sorry!!!  Peter

pistolfan,

What cast bullet and load are you shooting in your Waters?  I am shooting 287346's using WC-844 surplus powder.  Very good accuracy out to 200 yards...M.O.A. all of the way.  Just curious.  Thanks...BCB

A few years back I used a 10" Bull Barrel Contender in 7-30 Waters. Without the added length of the Muzzle Brake that is about what you have. I would have to agree with the others, give it a try before you decide to sell it, the 7-30 Waters is a great cartridge and right at home in the Deer Fields.

In my 10" 7-30 Waters Barrel I used the 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip handloaded to a muzzle velocity of 2258 FPS. I took 3 Whitetails with this barrel / load combination, and my cousin's husband used it to take a 4th Whitetail that particular season. All were One Shot Kills at a variety of different ranges from 40 yards to father than I will discuss here.

The 7-30 Waters is a great cartridge, it is easy to load for, mild to shoot, and just plain works good.

Try it, I think you'll like it.
