The super blackhawk hunter has a solid rib running the full length of the barrel milled to accept ruger scope mounts.  If you are going to scope your pistol it keeps you from having to have the gun drilled and tapped.
I also think it looks better. JMO

I have the Super Blackhawk Hunter in the 45 LC.  I have it topped off with a 2X Leupold.  I've been very happy with it so far.

I have a SBH .44 mag topped with a leupold 2X.  I shoot the lyman 429427 bullet  pushed by XX grain of Surplus WC 820.  It puts all six shots into one ragged hole at 25 yards.  It has shot completely through every deer that I have shot with it.  Using the same load the Ruger recoil is considerabley less than the 10 inch contender.

mine is a 44 mag.  if you intend to scope the gun;  absolutely they are worth it.  and after you scope it,  you can take it on and off and your zero wont change.   really i think the "convertability" is really handy.  the ribbed barrel also helps keep light from bouncing off the barrel and fuzzing your sight picture.   not usually a factor; until it snows and the sun is shining.   awful nice to have that breaking up the glare.   my gun is accurate enough to outshoot me.  with 240 grain noslers and and 20 grns h110i was getting 3 inch groups at 75 yards.   i am sure the gun can do better.  i use a differnt load though (cheaper to shoot, not as accurate, but still meets my requirements).
if you never plan on putting a scope on,  then i would say they are not worht the extra coin; but still nice and a head turner, too.

I had a 44 Hunter that was very accurate and I loved the pistol but someone else must have liked it also because they stole it and I've yet to see it again.  But.....I did order one of the new ones in 41 magnum and I guess I'll go pick it up after the first of the year.  Let Christmas go by and all the vacations and then get my new toy.  I told the wife I was done buying guns this year so Jan 2 is new year.....

I like them alot. The only thing that held me back from buying one was the fact that they weren't made in .41Magnum. Now I have one in .41Magnum and have put a stainless bisley kit on it. I've got a silver 2x Leupold on it and it's going on my next pig hunt. I'll be testing the Winchester 240gr. Platimun tip in it on a medium sized (200-250lb) hog I hope. RKBA! :)
