.308" on a .44 Rem Mag case???
« on: October 29, 2009, 05:06:42 PM »
Does anybody know of such a creature as a .308" based on a .44 Rem Mag case?  Maybe this wouldn't be much different from a .30-30 so maybe it isn't practical??  But if it is, how about a .257" or .243" on the .44 Rem Mag case?  But maybe that would be too close to a .25-35! LOL! :)

Thanks for any/all leads!

Plainsman,  I dont know of a " named wildcat " like that but it could be done quite easy.
It would have alot less powder capacity than a 30-30,  more like a 300 whisper.
If I were going to make that combination I would shorten a 300 Savage die by around .600 and form it on the 44 mag case.  You would need to neck the case down in a couple of steps before you got to 30 cal.
Just picture a case that looks like the top 2/3rds of a 300 Sav. with a rim.
I have a similar cartridge to that myself, out of a short rifle its a 150 yard deer round and would make a nice cartridge for a single shot handgun.
It could also be made in the other cals. you mentioned but all of the steps to neck it to smaller than 30 cal. would be a pain,  theres better choices for that.     Jedman   ;D

You would have to neck the .44 case down so much you would loose alot of brass. Case capiasity would be real close to the .300 Whisper after you neck it down. To much work for what you would get, in my oppenion.

You may be able to take a 357/44 B&D down to .308 without a lot of problems , still your looking at a very small case capisity , an other option may be to do it on the 445 super mag case , gaining you some case cap yet still keeping it the 44 platform .

Yet another option would be the 300GNR from Gary Reeder , its a 30/30 case shortened to 1/10 of an inch less than the 30 Herrett with a more blown out case and a sharper shoulder , this would keep it a Rimmed case for single shot type guns .
