Tough hunting conditions
« on: November 04, 2009, 02:00:11 PM »
Well, I finally got a couple of days of hunting in. ;D  A big full moon and clear skys have allowed the critters to spend the daylight hours hunkered down deep in the timber.  On top of that, the dry weather lately has made it impossible to take a step without the sounds of twigs, pine cones and whatever else from making loud crunching sounds underfoot.  Still hunting is very difficult, right now, to say the least.
I jumped a very large muley buck in the timber yesterday.  Though I managed to get very close, he jumped and took off so fast that any attempted shot would have been rediculous.  His rack towered over his ears and watching it disappear so quickly was discouraging.
Today, I saw evidence that the animals were moving last night, but are deep, high and out of sight during daylight.
I think I will focus on some work around the place and wait out these conditions.
  THINK SNOW!
Gotta git'me a bigger ice box

Every morning I mark the snow level in the Elkhorns and it's higher in the afternoon... weather report isn't looking good for snow.  Slight chance of precip over the weekend.

Saw a bunch of mulie does while my youngest and I were out walking the other afternoon, but wasn't ready to stop hunting and start working just yet.  Jumped a fox at the same time, didn't know which way to look for a moment!

Have to work all weekend, I might take Tuesday off and turn Veteran's Day into a two day hunting holiday.

I hear you on the dry, egg shell conditions.  A buddy has some fox on his place that I am going to try calling tomorrow morning. Hopefully friday or saturday we will get some moisture so I can get busy after the elk.  Two weeks from now I will be holed up in a camper looking for a smoker buck.

We've been lucky with the wet damp conditions over here in the Flathead, but the game are being scarce as all get out.  We are suppose to get some more rain/snow for this weekend which I'm not happy about.

I did finally get a good deal on an XOP Game Hauler Cart, so I need to find a large animal on hooves that I can test this out on.  ;D

My 15 year old son and I went out this weekend, wound up driving from Billings to Hysham where he got a nice Whitetail buck.  Then we headed North up to Mosby and went on North of it almost to Ft. Peck looking for mulie does.  None on BLM of course, so we went to our cabin north of Winnett for the night.  Son said he wanted to go back where we were the first morning :-\ so went back down and saw 2 whitetail does that he missed.  Had a good weekend with him and proud of his buck, second deer he has gotten.  We did get tired of all the driving, put over 500 miles on this weekend.  He can't get time off his job anymore on the weekends so this was his only hunt with Dad this year. :(  3 more weekends for Dad however, and the last one is a 4 dayer :)  Hope everyone is haveing a safe and productive hunt this year, Jon, I know you are.  I followed your sucess with the new 7mm-08, congrats.  DP

I dunno about eastern MT, but western just got hammered with snow.  2' (that's FEET) reported in Bozeman, the same in Twin Bridges, here in Helena it's been snowing all day but not sticking.  Should be good up in the hills though.

Of course the wife wants to go to Bozeman this weekend.  Maybe I'll get out Sunday.

In-laws in Big Timber say they have 8".   Just starting to stick in Billings.  Hopefully we can get out and track some elk...

No snow yet really in the Flathead Valley, but they but they are calling for 70% chance of it today.  Being in the upper part of the Bannah Belt it will be a while before we really get hammered.  I'm hoping for snow, for the tracking part for hunting tomorrow for my partner.

He will be looking for a nice buck he missed last weekend, and I will be trying to video his hunt for him because I don't have a tag any longer for this area we are going to.
