rebarrel on a nagant????
« on: December 28, 2009, 10:27:12 PM »
?????
i wondered about re barreling a Nagant m91/30 or m44   the rim on the 500s&W is same as a 762x54r     montana riflesmiths make a .500 barrel in raw and stainless unchambered     mod the mag well with a dremmel very carefully     and rebarrel to 500 S&W  for an indiana deer rifle?  just a thought what should it cost to remove and reinstall a barrel   thread one new one   and cutting chamber if i rent a reamer?????
kinda curious       benefit??? durable classic military action!!! dependable!!!!  and legal for indiana pistol cartridge rifle season
i cannot find a remmy 788 in 44mag  so this could be an option?????

The nagant would likely work for this conversion but the straight 500S&W may require a bit more than just mild conversion of the rails to get it to feed. I would consider the use of an autopistol magazine in the mag well. This will position the round for correct feeding and provide the feed lips to feed a rimmed straight cased round such as this. A centerfeed mag such as the 340 or 788 would likely be the best starting point.. anything else would likely be too small. Costs would be something else. A local smith might be your best bet or perhaps Montana Rfielsmiths could be persuaded to undertake the task..

The russian gun does not feed like a modern Remington or Savage, it has a mechanical system to allow each round in turn into the loading position.  It may work fine with the 500 S&W.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

It would be an interesting project if you want to do all of the work as a hobby type thing. It would be an utter waste of money because you will have the following problems:
1. need to remove the old barrel first; this is difficult on MN rifles, becuase the receiver tends to twist. You will need special wises and jigs to prevent damage to receiver.
2. You will need to alter the feeding quite a bit, and it may not work in the end. Better leave it as a single shot.
3. You need new barrel.

By the time all is said and done, it will probably cost 3 times as much as a Handi Rifle in that caliber.
