Encore Holster
« on: September 22, 2003, 08:45:11 AM »
I need some help in deciding the best way to holster my encore pistol for hunting.  The problem is, I am left-handed, so that seems to limit my choices.  I think I would like either a left side belt holster or a cross draw bandolier style holster.  My encore is scoped with an 11" barrel.  I would prefer cordura style material versus leather.  Any suggestions on who might make these styles.  Any information or suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks,

Smoky

Hey Smoky:

Unless you just gotta have a holster, go with a sling. I have put slings on all my favorite Contenders and Encores that I take in the woods, and altho I have holsters, mostly I just sling them. Works well for me. Just my 2 cents.

Shoot safe--by the way, what part of La. are you located ??

I would forget the Holster idea, A Sling on an Encore is the only way to go.

Something you might try, Is to "custom mortify" a holster for your needs. I think if you shop around the gunshops in your area, you will find a used cordura holster to fit your Encore. Depending on barrel length, one sized for large-frame double-action revolvers usually works pretty well. If it is too short for your barrel, just cut it off, and let the barrel hang out. If you use a 'scope, you will have to cut a slot out of the topstrap, to clear the 'scope & mount. I have two holsters done this way, and, though they ain't purty, they work fine. Beings you're left-handed, finding a used holster may be a little more difficult, but they should be cheaper, when you find one. With little invested in a holster, it doesn't hurt too much to cut them up. It also gives you a chance to do a little experimenting, and see what suits you, before buying a more expensive rig.>>>>>>Bug.

I have slug an encore for many years and never been happy with it. The problem is I have never found a good "balance" point when using a sling and the gun tends to want to swing if you move at any pace. It is always hanging upside down an several times I have knocked the scope out of alignment when it swung against the tree climing into a stand. I'm going to try a bandolier type holster this year.
Just another worthless opinion!!

Smoky,
Give these folks a look www.pistolpackaging.com I have been useing one of their bandoler holsters for about 3 years now and really like it alot! Tried the sling thing, did'nt work for me. Their type of holster is very comfortable and convenient to use for walking and glassing. Also a great way to tote extra rounds on the belt. I've seen them advertising on Ebay lately. These are the people that makes Larry Weishums (? spelling)holsters. Hope this helps........

   Best,

Smoky

I have one of the custom made PistolPak holsters and cross shoulder belt for my 14" 7x30 Contender.  I considered the sling but the feedback I recieved back then indicated many were not happy with them so I decided to go with a holster setup and have nothing attached to the gun.

The custom made PistolPak holster works well but I didn't care for the cross over shoulder belt.  Too much weight hanging on my shoulder and it could/did flop around also when bending over, climbing, etc.  Also, it took two hands to get the gun out because you had to hold the holster with one hand and pull the gun out with the other hand.  I took the holster off the custom shoulder belt and put it on a wide waist belt and have been happy.

Only thing I didn't like about the holster was once the leather conformed to my gun, it allowed the gun to settle deep into the holster and now the barrel sticks out the bottom of the holster a bit.  Maybe some stitching would tighten mine up and better position the gun in the holster.

Having the weight of the gun down around my waist was much more comfortable with better weight distribution and balance.

I've been carrying around a Contender  and/or Encore since 1973.  I've tried about every way possible.  For my money the sling is the thing and the one described in southern utah's post is better than sliced bread.  Basically, it is a sling with a quick adust buckle for two lengths...short for carry position...long for shootin' position.  It adjusts quickly, quietly, and easily, even with my old achin, fumbling fingers.  I don't know him and he doesn't know me and I bought mine just like everybody else, but this sling may be the best after market accesory available for Contender/Encore IMHO of course.  Thanks guy, you did REAL good.
