Ultra Hunter ***Modifications***

SO i have an Ultra Hunter in 308 wit hthe 22 inch barrel.  It has a 4-12x52 scope and front bipod.  It all comes apart and goes into my backpack.  I want to make cuts in the stock to reduce weight.  Have any of you done this to the laminate stock.  Something similar to a Dragonov stock?

This whole project is making my wife nuts since I just spent over $3K for a custom bolt gun, but nothing beats this for packing. Plus I have a 407 yard kill with it on a blacktail buck.

If weight is the main concern then why not put a synthetic stock with a good recoil pad on it.
That would save a lot more then cutting a wood stock.
I personaly don't like them but they are much lighter.
Maybe even one of the camo ones.

we are alike on this one.  I dont like the synthetic stocks for these rifles and I would like to spent the money on other things.

ANOTHER QUESTION MIGHT BE WHO MAKES REPLACEMENT STOCKS TOO? BUT I REALLY WANT TO MODIFY THIS GUN TO GET THE BEST WEIGHT AND ACCURACY AT THE SAME TIME.

i sugest trying to find another set of laminate stocks to try and cut into just in case it doesnt go as planned then your not out a rifle

not a bad idea.....so you have not seen anyone doing this.  I had a Krico rifle that had slats in the forearm and holes in the butt once.

The factory thumbhole stock has a hole in it and is lighter than a regular monte carlo laminate.  ;D

I love the tough quality and good looks of laminates , but boy i have to agree with the weigth issue .. I say go for it , i know what your reffering to with the nicely place cut outs on higher end rifles laminate stocks to drop weight ... Should it not work out then buy a new set and try again..

Or you might consider contacting Gunstock or Boyds and seeing what they can do on one of their Handi stocks as far as modifacations go ... Maybe you can get what you want without having to risk your factory stock.

I like the thumbhole stock and since it is only a 308 it would be fine.  WHERE DOES THE STOCK BOLT ATTACH ON THE THUMBHOLE? The stock bolt is the same issue I have been concerned over on the regular laminate.

I see the 450 is no longer offered from HR for thte Ultra.. Now no big-bore for my gun???

There's the .444 and 45-70, there's no difference in Handi and Ultra frames, they use the same SB2 rifle frame.  ;)

Yes, all barrels and stock sets will fit all H&R single shot firearms except the 10ga based shotgus.

Here is what you can do with a Ultra Lam stock. You can also do without the cheek piece. Besides I hollowed out the stock with a 3/4" or 7/8 long wood bit. That stock is on a 257 Roberts Handi.
The rifle with scope and a 24" octagon barrel weighs only 7-1/4lbs. You are right I would not put up with Tupper ware stock.

If you want lighter yet you can cut out the stock center, like my take down 12g canoe gun.

the cutout canoe gun id what I was thinking along with retaining the cheekpeice.
