Spooking Deer too much hype.
« on: October 26, 2009, 04:52:44 AM »
I think there is alot of hype about spooking deer. Sunday when I dropped that Doe I took my phone too the stand with me. I never take it in and this was a first, as I forgot to throw it in the truck. I had been seeing deer all morning long and even drew on a few, one being a spike with one inch spikes I couldn't see until he turned his head I let my bow down. Well just about a minute after that my phone rang, it sounded like a live band in the no wind quiet woods. I rushed to answer and seen it was my mother so I answered it and said WHAT! She asked what's the matter did you have deer close, I said not any more. I asked what do you want, mom; I just wanted to see if you wanted to go to breakfast me; no mother bye.

I turned off my phone stuck it in my pocket and four does stepped out coming to me. I couldn't believe it, the one I took was figured to be 41/2 or 5 as she was the lead doe also. 8 eye balls 4 mature does I was completely dumbfounded. I am also a smoker unfortunately I have quit before 1 1/2 years total then my dad passed away last December 1st, that ended my smoke free life. Most all the deer I have shot with my bow as well as my rifle I have had to put out a cigarette before I shot them. Now before anyone goes saying I had a wind favor let me be clear by saying NO I DID NOT.

My phone doe I had no wind, and many of the others have came from the direction of the wind after a smoke. Yes I know I could see more deer if I didn't smoke in the stand, but I hunt for very long periods of time and I just can't go 4 or 5 hours without. I rarely smoke in the evening hunts mostly morning, the heat lumen's are rising in the morning allowing the smoke to rise up and away.

Anyone else have an I can't believe it story while deer hunting with a bow, I am just wondering if I am just very lucky, it can't be skill.... ??? ??? ??? :o :o

Years ago when I was younger I smoked the big old nasty cigars while hunting, one day I had a nice 6 pt buck come in with his nose to the wind like he was smelling the smoke and liked it. Well he never got to smell it again because I did not even put it out I just hung it up and stuck him with a arrow. But you never know maybe the next 10 ran the other way. ::)

I and an older than me friend, used to be on a lease with 2 other guys younger than us. My friend and I got to talking about how much easier at our age if we rode our 4 wheelers to our stands, and if it would disrupt the deer. I told him that I didn't believe that it would as we were hunting on agricultural land, and the deer were used to hearing and seeing, tractors, pickups, 4 wheelers and such, and the only thing in the woods that was unusual to the deer, were men walking in them once a year.
Well, we started riding right up to our stands and getting off and in the stands. We didn't even try to hide them. Both of us continued to kill our three deer each, (one buck and two does) while the other two guys continued to walk in, and kill their one deer (MAYBE) a year. Naturally they blamed their bad luck on us running the deer out with the noise, and pointing out our success did no good. We later lost the lease to the big money Dallas Texas boys, and my wife misses the venison as do I.

I don't believe that deer spook as easily as what the mag. writers want us all to believe. The best way to shoot a great deer is to find out which field he hangs out in and then drive a tractor over near him and bang, dead deer. I watched my grandpa drive his feed truck within 40 yards of a decent 8 pointer, get out and shot him. If the deer become used to this kind of activity, use it to your advantage.

I have a rifle range behind the house and this area has a big deer population, we have had to quit shootin and wait for them to get from behind the targets. It is not unusal for them to be grazing  25 yds behind you as you are shooting. The easily spooked deer is brought to you by the people selling scent lock cloting and special detergent and soap and a lot of other things you do not need. but it is a billion dollar a year industry selling this stuff to  people.

Kinda like the ultra-super-go-fast-short-to-medium-magnum-low-recoil-short-to-long-or-extreme-range-absolutely-necessary-ballistic-perfected-got-a-have-it-to-be-successful-DEER RIFLE torpedoman?
Isn't it odd that the American Indian killed deer with a home made bow and arrow, while dressed in buckskin ALL OVER the United States, INCLUDING WYOMING AND MONTANA, yet some preach with conviction that you have to have that long range rifle to hunt out there, and THEY KNOW, cause they live there?

I always have my cell phone with me when I hunt. However, I always turn it off right before I step into the woods. I'm hunting and it's my time.

It's like when I step into my church. I want to focus clearly on God with no interuptions. My phone get's switched off then too.

Hey, I figure the only thing that I need interrupted for is if the Russian's are attacking.....and then I figure that should be pretty noisy, and I should hear it anyway.

Guy's around here are getting smoked up. I've been doing it the last couple season's. It seems to work for me also. I didn't buy the unit, but doing about the same thing with my grill.

I guess the all new, gotta have it, "scent smoker" is for those hunters too stupid to know how to build a very small fire, put out the flames, and stand over it with a ground cloth or piece of tent material wrapped around them to trap the smoke in their clothes.

As has been said I smoke too.Biggest deer I've shot(160's)I had to lay down my cigarette down to draw my bow. They do get used to the sounds and smells of humans in ag settings.I don't know if it would work out in the open country where not too many people are in their bedroom every day.Around here the deer are in the city and live to a ripe old age.I have had deer in my yard several times, but do live out in the county. There's a very large buck that may get it that stays in my neighbor's pasture be hind my house. He's been there for at least three years now.Neighbor has 7 acres and i have 3.Maybe if I can't conect at my other two places,I'll try the neighbor's house.Slow

Every spring during turkey hunting I have deer come in to investigate my decoys.  Last year 3 does stood in my decoys and one actually nudged one with her nose.
Well I thought this was neat for the first half hour then I deceided they might be hurting my turkey hunt, so I took off my hat (I was about 25 yds away) and waved it at them.  Two of them walked off, another walked towards me, got withing about 10 yds. and started stamping her feet.  It was a crack up, I with I had my camera with me.  I started laughing and she just walked off.
And I did not have scent block on.

while hunting ginsing and morels in jefferson national forest i've walked up on deer that had never seen a human they just stamped the hoofs and barked at me, no fear, no panic, just stood there and watched to see what i would do.
