Reloaders, how many cases do you have for each Handi?
« on: November 03, 2009, 01:45:15 PM »
Obviously if you were shooting 9mm pistols or ARs with 30 round mags, you would need hundreds, probably thousands, of cases to load up, and probably a progressive press.

But for a single shot in a popular caliber like .22 Hornet, 30-30, or 45-70, what is your inventory?

I do get that big game hunters don't need more than a box of ammo for 5 years, and that colony hunters need a thousand rounds for a vacation. But how about plinkers.

I have a lot of choices to shoot and rarely burn more than 50 rounds on a trip to the range (5 minutes away, go for 2 hours), all in, for 2-4 guns. Maybe 100 rounds if the wife is off with the kids for the day. Huge difference from when I shot ARs.

My brass and loaded ammo inventory far exceeds my need for even 6 months of fun.

I keep a hundred or so on hand for each caliber I load for. Works for me.

I currently have about 90 cases of 45 Colt, the only round I reload for.

I sure am glad my wife don't read these, I have her convinced that 500 rds was the norm. for each handi rifle

don't even want to mention for the AR-15 (223 ak also ) or the 7.62x39  ak's & sks that we have.

But swallowed pretty hard when trying to buy some 7mm-08 brass and componets that maybe come a 200 rounder

problem is I have become so attached to each and every round i have casted or loaded just hate to send em down range-- all that hard work just gone in a flash .

About 5 thousand, loaded for each handgun,2 to 5 hundred ,loaded for rifles, except .223 which I keep in the amount of handgun ammo Too hot to shoot in the good ole Arizona summer, so I just load and wait for winter to blast them.

I don't usually keep much brass, once I hit 50, it gets loaded and stored, I keep about 500-600 rounds per rifle pistol and shotgun. It doesn't matter if I'm shooting rimfire or centerfire, I usually put 40-50 rounds down range a day...The joy of working 3rd shift, and having all day to be outside.

165 gallons of 44mag, 110 gallons of 357 mag, 40-45 gallons 44spl, and maybe 25 gallons or so of 30-30 and about the same of 45-70, 41 mag 38-55 and 32spl. I traded off all the 38spl (about 25 barrels) and all rimless cases years ago when I closed the range. Naturally, 9m/m was the largest quantity, IIRC it was 63-64, 55 gallon barrels!

I've got about 250, 30-30's and about 200 of 45-70's also.  I have way too many 45-70's loaded with the Rem 405 gr softnose and not enough cast bullet loads as it is the cast bullet loads that get all the shooting.  7-08 makes me nervous as I only have about a hundred, got to get more.  It really makes me uncomfortable having that few rounds loaded.  I know that it will cost me dearly for more 7-08 brass unless I want to just neck down some 308.  (that's an idea!)  For handgun calibers I usually have 600 to 1000 or more, depending on the caliber.  Need me a .223 barrel, I already have several thousand rounds on hand for that already.  44 Man

I have about 300-400 for each of the rifles. The .223 and 7.62x39 are the exceptions with about 1500 each. One thing I've learned since the election and the Obama shortages that followed. All that brass is useless without a good supply of primers! I never had to worry about that before, but times have changed.

The least I have in any caliber, single shot or not, is 300 rd.  I keep stocked up whenever I get a new caliber or see a sale.  The most I have is probably 357 mag and has to be over 4000, used to shoot alot of it in handguns years ago.  Most calibers between 500 and 1,000.  I do have some cases I don't have guns for (yet) that may only have 100 or so.  (But honey, I have all these cases, I need the gun.) ;) ;D  DP

I guess I'm the exception because I have rigles other than Handi's and I don't separate them.
I'm also a brass hog and pick up range brass, but fired brass at gun shows, buy new brass on sale, etc.

I was cleaning up the other day and found a box that had among other things, over a thousand fired 30/06 cases. I have no idea where it came from.

I have about 700 for my 45/70's.

Can't have too much brass.

For Handi's only - Usually I have around 100 loaded ready to go with these two exceptions. I was planning on going on a PD Shoot next spring and so I have 300 22K Hornets ready to go + 200 loaded cases that need to be fire formed yet. I will not be going now, so the 300 will last me for a while. I have some where around 100 - 38 Specials loaded up + 200 - 357 + 100 - 357 Max for my 357 Max Handi. The 357 Max Handi gets the most use.

I reload for everything I own except the .17HMR.

I load for my .223 Ultra, but I also own 2 Mini-14s, that shoot the same load.  I have thousands of loaded rounds for them.

I load for my .35 Whelen Handi, but I also own a Mauser action in .35 Whelen.  I have probably 10 boxes of shells for them.

I load for my 30-06 Handi, but I also have five other 30-06s.  At the range since I am a regular there, people are always bringing me their once fired empties.  I have hundreds of boxes of empties, and probably 60 to 70 boxes of loaded stuff.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' I only have two handi rifles. For the 25-20 I have 100 cases and for the .30-30 an untold number of hundreds of them. But for other rounds I load for in other rifles and handguns it varies from a low of 80 cases for my .257 Whby. Mag. to several thousands for my various .223s. On average I have many hundreds to thousands for most everything thing other than the two listed above with low numbers.

When I get a new chambering to load for, I get 50 pieces of brass.  I replace it with another 50 after 4 reloads for some and maybe 8 for others.  Except for 22lr, I dont have any guns that spread a lot of lead per hour so typically 20 per gun is all I need at the range.

I think I am essentially running a Just-In-Time inventory operation.  I experiment with different bullets and powders so much that if I bought in bulk I would not be able to play with so many different options.  It also helps to have Bass Pro Shop, Cabelas, and Graffs reloading all within a 2 minute detour from my normal drive home from work  ;D.
