Single Six Cenerfire Conversions????

In 1978 I bought a Ruger New Model Stainless Steel Super Single Six Convertable from the S&H Kress store here in town. Here it is 30+ years later; Kress is gone but I still have the Ruger.  It was never accurate.  I've posted about the patterns it shoots. I don't want to get rid of it even if I could get my $89 back. 

What level of difficulty would I encounter in a conversion to a centerfire?  I've been thinking I need a BBQ gun in 25-20 and this might be the base if the conversion isn't too expensive.  I know I could get a Single six centerfire but this one never get shot anyway.  I was thinking of a six inch octagon barrel.  Maybe later a little engraving...not much just a touch here and there.  Some nice grips and a custom holster to carry it finish it.

Would it be cheaper start with a ceterfire?  I've seen a few 32 Mags but don't own one now.  I don't think I've seen one in stainless though.

If your going to convert it, have you considered a re-barrel the rimfire first and see how it shoots?

  Harton, and Clements I know both do centerfire conversions on these and I'm sure some others do as well.  I inquried recently about changing a .22 Single Six to .38 special and base was $800 or so.  Add the extra $400 or so for the octagon bbl and you start getting up there.  At that point you don't want to skimp on not getting a nice finish or having the action done.  Contact one of these gentlemen or another top level gunsmith - don't go with the local "Oh sure I can" guy.  If it's worth doing get it done by the right person.

  I just wanted to comment on the 25/20WCF cartridge when used in a revolver.  I have a S&W "K" frame chambered in 25/20,



  The biggest problem is, is getting a variety of bullets that will work in the short chamber of a revolver.  I finally designed a "Keith" style 25 cal. bullet for mine, that i swage, sometimes using a spent shotshell primer for the jacket, (not pictured)



  And they work very well on the small game i've used them on.

Before doing all that I would reccomend you slug your bore and chambers. More than likley you will see an improvment if you swedge your bullets out to 223/224 and shoot for group. When Ruger designed the .22 SingleSix it was around the 22mag cartrige. The logic is pretty simple: 22lr is 222/223 in diameter and the Mag is 224, if you make it shoot lr good with a tight bore and you try to shove a 22mag down the pipe you have major issues with the over sized bullet. Make it .224 and it will shoot 22mag good and the lr will ride on top of the lands and give "okay" performance. Mine went from shooting softball size groups at 25yards to chasing golfballs and shotgun shells at the same distance.
I use the Paco Kelly Acu'rzr tool and now size all my .22lr and have seen inprovments from every piece I own.

Amen to that!  I've handled Alan Harton's (Houston, Texas) Single-Six conversions to .38 Sp.
Those are the finest little revolvers you'd ever hope to see.
Alan is a good honest man and a superior artist and craftsman.

How does the Accurzer Tool work?  Does it only flatten the bullet face?

    It cups the bullet nose and more importantly swags the slug up to your specified diameter.  With each tool you get two sizes(one on each end).  I got mine in .223 & .224.  The .224 works good in my Single Six.  Paco tells you right up front not to use it on hp bullets...but it took ol' hard head here a while to realize that he knew what he was talking about.  I think I got 3 different nose punches with mine.  Good money spent here!!! ;)
