Range Report .22 WMR Sportster
« on: November 12, 2009, 09:30:09 AM »
Well I went up to the upper pasture where it is mostly set up as a private range.  I purchased CCI TMJ ammo, and got my Sporter sighted in at 25 yards, then moved out to 100 yards.

I still have some more shooting to do, as always another excuse just to shoot  ::)

Here is the barrel at 100 yards.

After getting an acceptable group at 100 yards and making a few adjustments then I moved to the corner of the target visable on the barrel, but acceptable 100 yard accuracy for this little .22 WMR Handi Rifle.

That's interesting.  I've always used CCI .22LR and .22 Mag. and never found any reason to change.  Accuracy has always been consistent with it.

Although I don't have a sportster, my groups with super x isn't what I was hoping for. I think I'll have to give CCI a try. I do have one box of win. supremes 34 gr. to see how they shoot. Of course, It could have been me, too! ::)

Rimfire likes and dislikes for ammo...
« Reply #5 on: November 24, 2009, 02:54:13 PM »
Pete and Snuffer,

Good evening!  Every rimfire firearm seems to have it's own peculiar likes and dislikes for ammo!  My Handi seems to like everything with Winchester on the label, but hates everything with CCI! I buy a box of each different type of .22WMR I run across for testing.

I'm starting to buy more .22LR again too!  With the cost of .22LR going up, I figure I might as well match some good stuff to each gun.  I'm loaded with bulk packs for plinking, but for hunting I like consistent accuracy.

I have a Marlin 780 bolt action in .22LR that used to LOVE American Eagle 40gr back when they were the cheapest ammo to get.  I haven't bought any of that in over 15 years.  I just mounted a new BSA Sweet 22 scope on it and will be testing a variety of ammos out of it to get the best match.  The most I've shot it hunting was about 350rds in a day and a half of gopher shooting.  Considering I can shoot up a brick or more in an afternoon with the 10/22's, it'll be worth it to wring out all the potential of the Marlin/BSA combo.

So testing a variety of ammos can make a difference.  I've seen some good ones at 25yds that didn't do so well at 50 and vice versa.  I chrono all the types and look for consistent velocities as well as group sizes.

Good luck and have fun! :)

I have a Rossi .22mag pump.  I put a tang sight on it and lucky for me I found that it shoots the cheapest .22 mag ammo very well.  That is the 40gr Fiocchi.  I find them for about $7.50 a box online.
And my Mini 14 shoots the 55gr Fiocchi great also.
And I use the Fiocchi copper plated 3" mag #5 for Turkey.  Made in USA and afordable, whats not to like?
