Uncommon question; 454 in 45LC
« on: November 08, 2009, 07:58:02 AM »
Preface. I once fired a 300 gr Sierra JSP 44Mag from my 454 SRH. The case had to be driven out with dowel and hammer. ALWAYS USE THE CORRECT AMMUNITION AS STATED ON YOUR FIREARM. So it's fine to fire 45LC through the 454 SRH because RUGER marks the cylinder for that ammo.
Anyway, I read lots of threads wondering if 45LC was okay in a Rossi 454. There's opinions both ways. So I look at my Rossi 45LC and wondered if my l o n g 370 gr 454 would slide in to the chamber. Snick; all the way in. The bolt/lever closes easily. I made some dummy 454's, and guess what, they load and cycle very well. It's even possible that the 45 and 454 barrels are the same. Of course the bolt might be different. Receiver might be different steel; heat treating may be different, etc.
Long story short (shorter than it could be), use the correct ammo for your gun, as the manufacturer marked the gun.

NO NO NO NO NO NO

DO NOT fire a .454 Casull in a .45 Colt chamber. That it will physically go in does NOT make it safe to fire.

The 454 Casull is just an extended 45 Colt round. Extended so it will not chamber, in a firearm properly chambered for the .45 Colt cartridge.

I would shoot a .45 Colt round, in a firearm, chambered for the .454 Casull caliber cartridge.

However, I absolutely would not shoot a .454 Casull round, in any firearm, chambered for .45 Colt cartridge, regardless whether the firearm would chamber the round, or not...

what can happen is even if it chambers it could be so tight that the crimp doesnt want to open when the round goes off. The 454 is allready at the ragged edge of pressures and a crimp that wont open will push them way into the dangerous range.

I bought a 16" 45LC; the gun came in a box labelled "45 Colt R92-57008". The barrel was also stamped "45 Colt". Well, after discovering that shorter bullet loads would not cycle, I took it in for some refining. The gunsmith called me two days later, after measuremnts and double checking had convinced him my rifle was actually chambered for 454. It didn't matter to me - I mean it does shoot 45's well now, and that's what I wanted. Factories can make mistakes and maybe they do use the same barrel for 45 and 454. And no, my magazine tube is not screwed into the action, nor does it feature front end loading

I am guessing that these rifles were intntionally chabered long. The reason being that if chambered correctly for 45 long colt the camming action of the rifle would fairly easily force a 454 round into the chamber. If this were to be done you would have a hand grenade in your hands. I would do a chamber cast if I were you.

My Win 94 AE 45LC will chamber 454 Casull rounds! :o Found this out by cycling a Casull round through it- on purpose!!  As I have both an SRH and Puma in 454 Casull! So when I use the Win 94 I double check to make sure I only use 45 LC  rounds! ;)
