Anyone found a use for IMR-4227?
« on: August 15, 2009, 01:33:13 PM »
I've had a can in my shop for years and find only a very small selection of calibers & loads for this powder. It seems to have very little application unless it can be interchanged with Hodgdon 4227. I know that is usually frowned upon but I found some loads data in which they both showed the same charge, same pressure and same velocity in the 44Mag. Are they the same? Why do both of them show multiple loads for the .222 Remington but none for the .223 Remington. I'd like to hear something positive about this 1 lb albatross.

I also use it for 357max and found some loadings for 45LC in a T/C manual.  I managed to get a 5lb can for $40 from a gunshop that was going out of business many years ago and just ran out a few years ago.  For the max it's an accurate load.

It was developed to use as a cast bullet powder. Burns cooler than 296/H110.  I still use it, but generally get better accuracy out of 296/H110. And since I gas check most of my revolver loads, don't really need it, but always keep a can around just to try different loads. gypsyman

I've used it in  both .357 and .460. Mostly as a substitute for H110 when I can't get or run outta magnum primers. Accuracy is good, but it don't push 'em as fast as H110. Works better than 2400 in the .460 when downloading. Meters beautifully.

it is very simualar to h4227 and can be used in any application the hodgdons is. It is one of my favorite powders for the 45 colt 44mag 32mag 3220 and 22 hornet. It is also my powder for my go to load in my 500 linebaughs. It gives velocitys simular to 110 but is easier to ignite and is a better cold weather powder and is also a bit better then 110 for downloading.

IMR 4227 is mostly used in handguns; but also in small capacity rifle cartridges too. It's burn rate is similar to H 4227, but as always, you need to work up a load, just like switching lots of the same powder. It's burn rate is a bit slower than H 110 and W296, but faster than AA 1680. It is listed for most magnum handgun loads and, like I said, small capacity rifle cases. The 222 Remington case capacity is getting a little large for this powder. Look for the 221 Fireball, 218 Bee, 22 Hornet and 22K Hornet to shoot well with IMR 4227 - not necessarily the fastest, but people have gotten good accuracy with it. It has been used successfully in large straight walled cases such as trap door 45-70 Gov loads too. Good Luck and Good Shooting

:) Vman, if you have a hornet, it really works well in it. It is my primary powder for that caliber.  ;)

It has the same applications as H4227 but you DO NOT use the exact same loads as burning rate is slightly different.

Don't overlook some of the bigger cartridges , one of my best shooting 25/06 loads was with this powder , it was not the fastest by any means but did group very well .

The load came from an older Lyman book , 46th if I remember right , also the 2008 Hodgdon's Annual has some oddball data for this powder too .

Just this past week I tried this powder with a felt wad and a 405 gr cast bullet in my 45-70 C Sharps 1875. The first 5 shot group at 100 yds was right at 1.5". This was with a hunter style peep and blade front for sights.

Many of the ones previously listed, but with minimal accuracy results, but I do have one that is not listed...

The 32 Long Colt...

Works well in an old Marlin 1892 model...

I use it in the 22 Hornet, 41 Mag, 44 Mag.

Have tried it in the 45 Colt but get a lot of unburnt powder left behind.

Used it in 357 Mag, 357 Max when I had them.

Have used it in the 45-70 but get better accuracy with some other powders.

I use CCI primers and get the accuracy with Magnums primers.  The old book I have (Speer I believe) showed Magnum primers in their load tables and I used them for years with no high pressure signs.  The newer book swithced the load tables to a standard primer and I made the switch and wasted about a month figuring out why my MOA Contenders went to 3 or 4 MOA.  Finally switched back to magnum primers and my accuracy returned.  I still go by the old book.

Each gun is different.  My 44 Mag Contender loves the stuff but my 44 Mag Marlin hates it and I have to load some 110 for it.  However my S&W and Marlin 41 Mag prefer the IMR4227 over 110.  Had a 41 Mag Contender barrel once that hated it but loved the 110 (I just hated the blast and flash of the 110 and sold the barrel).

It is one powder I buy in the 8 lb can for my applications.

Good powder for heavy bullets of 250+ gr in the 41 mag. I thought Hodgdon was going to terminate the IMR version and stay with H4227?

And GB I thought they WERE very close if not identical powders?? Or are they now but weren't way be when.

Since Hodgdon now owns IMR they may one day become identical but until then they've never been exactly the same just darn close Both are intended as reproductions of surplus take down 4227 powder. In that regard both pretty much duplicate that powder but as with most all things powder related close only counts in horse shoes, hand grenades and atomic bombs.

Roger on that GB - can never bee too careful. Since data is available for both there's no reason to temp fate and go outside the guidelines.  Thanks.  No matter what,  4227 of either brand is darned handy to have around IMHO.

Very accurate 357 mag powder. Also loaded 44 mag and 45 LC's with it. Used it for years.

h 4227 has been discontinued for a couple of years so whatever is laying around is all there is.
