parting out rifles ????
« on: November 05, 2009, 03:33:58 PM »
I heard a guy today that was talkin about parting out a remington 700,  said he could make more money by sellin the parts than the whole gun.
Is he full of garbage or legit?   does any one have an idea wher to sell the parts and about how would you price them???

I've seen this on some of the auction sites. Seems a shame to break up a rifle just for parts. I bought a cherry rem 700 varmint bbl in 308 sometime ago but the gent I got it from said it was a takeoff. Seems folks buy a rifle send it in and have it reworked and the first thing to come off is the bbl. Frank

He's probably right. It costs as much to buy an action as it does a complete rifle from those few places that sell actions separate. If you can find a buyer for the stock and barrel then you'd no doubt wind up with more from the package than if sold as a package.

Why folks would buy a used factory barrel tho is beyond me. If I want a new barrel for my rifle I'll buy a custom one not a factory take off but that's just me. Some stocks are fairly desireable some not so much so. I'd think factory plastic stocks hard to move but a nice looking walnut one or a laminate might sell well.

Still you have to find three buyers rather than one if you part it out and make three shipments. It's a lot of trouble for the hopeful eventual extra few bucks you might make. I can't see me ever doing it.

It's just I had never heard of it, figured it was entirely possible cause people need parts I guess,  but wondered if he was on the level or runin his mouth.
