Empire of the Summer Moon
« on: December 20, 2010, 03:42:43 AM »
I just finished this book and can recommend it highly.  It's generally the history of the Comanche Nation and specifically the life of Quannah Parker.  Very well told and unbiased toward either the Comanche or white man.
Also, I found it to be of great interest because I grew up and lived my younger days in the areas encompassed by the book.

Have a good read.

Wyo. Coyote Hunter, I'm currently reading The Last Stand.  Just into the first few chapters, but already it looks like a keeper.

PBS, Hey, it was a good one..I will reread it this spring before starting out on my fishing trips to Montana..Last summer my Sig. Other and I stopped at the Little Bighorn...She is not much of a history buff, or reader, but it sparked her interest so much she bought the book..after reading it I want to return with it fresh in my memory...let me know what you think when it is finished...

Found a Kindle under the tree this morning.  Took half the day to learn how to use it (without a grandkid to show me).  Just bought Empire of the Summer Moon without getting out of my easy chair.  Ain't it easy to spend money now.

Anybody else reading electronic books?  Do you like it?

WCH, My wife read The Last Stand before I got hold of it, and she has really gotten into the history of the Indian wars.  We will drive down to Texas in March and plan to stop off and visit the Little Bighorn battle site on the way.  We've been that route several times and each time we discuss stopping, but haven't so far.  That will happen in March.

Charles P, I have been wanting a Kindle for some time but have a difficult time justifying getting it, since I have stacks of regular books just waiting for me to dig into.  My older sister has a Nook and thinks electronic books are the way to go.

My inlaws have a Nook.  They have color display.  I can't see why that is an advantage since print is normally black on white.

My Kindle doe not bother my dry eyes as much as reading from a book.  No freight charges for e-books but you can't pass them to a friend.  No storage problem either but you must recharge every now and then.  There are pros and cons for sure.

I think schools will go to e-books some day.  Should save tons of money.  My daughter-in-law used electronic medical charts when she did her medical residency five years ago.  Completely paperless and continually up to date.  Kids in college submit their homework and research by computer, and chat with the professors even while the professor is at home.  I remember being terrified to go to a professor's office four decades ago.

Consider me old fashioned, but I still like having a book in my hand, and being able to turn the pages.
But hey! Even tho, I moved on to CD's and mp3's, I'm one of those guys that kept my 45's and LP's,  I still like to put them on once in a while.  BTW LP's are coming back big time with the young crowd.  8)

Just started this one (only 3 chapters in) and unless something changes
can tell it's going to be one I like.  Like Pot-Bellied Stallion the fact that
it is very much part of the history of TX  gives a lot of appeal to me.

And by the way, this will be my 3rd book read on a Kindle and I must say I like it.
