1894 Magazine Capacity

I was loading Hornady LeveRevolution .44 Magnums in my 1894 last night and try as I might, I could get only nine to fit in the magazine. The tenth round went about half-way and stopped. I thought it was a ten round magazine. Is something wrong?

The tube holds 9 plus 1 in chamber.

My 1894, 44 mag will hold 10 in the tube. It may be with the spitzer bullets, the additional length of the bullets is not allowing that 10th. Check the overall length of the LeveRevolution rounds against the overall length of FN rounds. I bet there's a little difference, at least enough to make up the half round.

this is what I found on the marlin website as per specifications for the 1894. I did not see a copyright, but if its not OK to show this, I apologize in advance GB. Don't want to cause any problems for anyone.

Printed specifications are one thing, actual fact is sometimes another.

I request that 1894 owners try stuffing their magazines and report back on observed capacity.
And if everybody else gets 10 rounds in theirs, please help me figure out why mine stops at nine.

Folks using lever rifles in CAS competition MUST load ten rounds in their magazines. Many use Marlin 1894s in .45 Colt which is the same length as a .44 magnum tho I suspect few use .44 mags as they would have to be loaded real light to meet velocity requirements so .44 specials would more likely be used. But .357 Mag is same length and is used as are .38 specials.

Bottom line is that most any Marlin with a 20" or longer barrel should hold ten rounds in the magazine. If yours won't then it is a problem unique to that rifle or the ammo you are trying to use.

My 46th edition Lyman reloading manual (so old it is on papyrus...) shows the OAL for .44 Mag to be 1.610.
The LeveRevolution ammo measures 1.642. 0.032 X 9 = 0.288 inch. Not quite 1/3 inch. More than 1/3 inch of the round was sticking out of the loading gate.
I don't see that as enough to reduce capacity by one round. It must be a problem with the gun.
Maybe the spring is not fully seated in the magazine follower or maybe the spring is too long. Any other ideas?

No, my gun was made in 1975. I think that was before California became a Peoples Republic.
