h&r .243 ultra light range report
« on: November 01, 2009, 11:56:51 AM »
well i finally got some time to take it to the range today, have had it for a while now and just havent had time.  Only had time to sight her in at the 50 rd range, sighted it about 2 inches high for 50 yds, but it was almost bullet on bullet with the hand loads, didnt group at all with factory loads though....i'm new to these h&r rifles but i found after 2 shots it would start to spread the groups out though dont know if that is common or not but the first 2 shots are right on each other then the 3rd is a few inches higher, let it cool for a while n good to go.  All in all im very happy with the rifle amd will deffinately be buying a few more handi's.....

Yep that sounds about right.  I bought the 3barrel combo for my youngest and his was the 20" ultralite aslo.  Keep it cool and it shoots  great.  Never ran factory thru it but a 87gr hornady hp at mid 2000's are very accurate and dont heat as fast.  Good reduced, short range, youth load.  Although Ihavent had a chance to test game performance yet.  I still have a few years to worry about that.  Good luck!

Yup, that's par for the course with the 243 Superlight, you can eliminate some of the 3rd and subsequent round flyers by bedding the forend, but unless you're colony shooting, the first two shots are all you'll need anyway.

My only concern is that you're load is 2" high at 50 yards.   According to JBM ballistics website, your load is going to shoot really high at 100.   I tried several bullet weights and BC's and most of the time they ended up 4 to 4.5 inches high at 100.
To be dead on at 200 yards, you'd need to be about .7" high at 50.

Just thought I'd share.
