Where Can I get A Subsonic barrel for my 870????
« on: August 21, 2010, 02:43:43 PM »
;)  Over the years I have read about extra long shotgun barrels that were used for shooting near or in cities...some may have been as long as 36 or 40 inches....they fired low speed ammo and were used as I remember for shooting pests near cities...I would like to locate one of these for my 870 if I can locate one...looked in Brownells, but couldn't find it if it was there...any help would be appreciated... ;D

Well WCH, one of my first shotguns was a Topper single shot with a 32" barrel, and with the lightest loads it was still a shotgun concerning noise level. Your gonna have to locate some really light shotgun shells to get a low noise level, and to do that, your most likely gonna have to have a light shot load too.

I've never heard them referred to as "sub sonic" before. I believe the barrels you are referring to tho are more like 60" to 72" long. The theory and I suspect that's all it is was that the longer barrel combined with low velocity ammo to begin with lowered the sound output.

It is kinda like firing a CB cap in a rimfire rifle the sound is greatly muffled from firing it in any handgun.

It might work as I've never yet been around one in use but I think you'll get as much effect by using truly slow ammo to begin with. I can tell you from first hand experience that you gotta go WAY lower than 1000 fps cuz some of the guys at the skeet range use ammo they claim is at that velocity and I can't tell any difference in sound from 30" barrels.

By lowering the velocity below the speed of sound you at least eliminate the sonic boom but contrary to popular opinion that doesn't mean they are quite.

;) Thanks for the replies....the barrels may have been much longer..you are probably right about the noise of the report also..I tried some subsonic .22 ammo and it was quite loud compared to cb caps..again thanks...

Somewhere on these forums during the past 6 months to a year there was a thread about a long barrel extension with accompanying picture - just can't remember which forum it was on.

Offhand I don't remember anyone making any super, super long barrels.  I think they were simply extensions that connected to the original barrel using the choke tube threads and resulted in ridiculously long total barrel lengths of something like 6 feet.

I do believe the object was, as you said, to reduce the noise level somewhat.

I could very well be wrong, but I think they were made by Hastings and may be discontinued.
