ironglow, this past week you question MY patriotism because I disagreed with you, and EMBELISHED my post with your own interpretation of what I did not even say, and I called you on it.
Man up here. Matt has called you out, everyone reading the thread knows your intent when you made the post he called you on, whether they step forward as Matt has or not. Your waffling. You've joined in with two imbecils and are now suffering the same fate.

  Dee;
  I think if you recheck that thread, I quickly replied that I was NOT questioning your patriotism..sorry if you took it that way, it was not meant in that way..As I said of myself, Dee..nobody knows your heart & belief as well as you do..so they cannot impute anything negative to your patriotism.

  Heather;
  Well said ..and well taken..I will refrain from such...

It would seem that all military people should be issued weapons and ammo and have them ready at all times anywhere they go in the world or at home in the states . Make it SOP ! The act of guard duty and policing with unloaded weapons should end . Our soilders should be armed and ready to fight at any moment and have orders to defend thenselves as the need arises , we are at war , RIGHT ?

I was in Viet-Nam in '68'.  Of course being out in the field I was armed 24/7.    I regularly visited 3 military bases 1)Vietnamese Army  2) Camp Horn Marines  3) Da-Nang Air Force Base.   On the Air Force Base I noticed no one was armed but me and the MP's.  I was told that the Air Force troops (Marines were there also, but didn't see any guns on them either) were assigned weapons, but they were locked in the armory.   How can you fight with a weapon you're not familiar with?   I saw plenty of weapons at Camp Horn, so I assumed they were all armed, and the Vietnamese post was definitely loaded to the gills.    The only base that was assaulted time after time was the Air-Base.
Enjoy your rights to keep and bear arms.

I spent 20 years in the Air Force, and have to say the bulk of Air Force personnel do not know how to handle a gun.  Yes they have to shoot during basic, and then every four or five years.  But during those times they are told every move to make, and the entire day is under such tight control, the guys are so afraid of making a mistake handling the gun that they don't soak up any of the information about safety, handling,  and operating the gun.  I learned to not let the M-16 instructors know I was an NRA shooting instructor.  If I did let them know they looked for things to trip me up so they could yell at me.  Therefore the Air Force personnel were not qualified to handle an M-16 on a daily basis.  And the Air Force did not want them to anyway.  Too afraid of an accidental discharge.  During Viet Nam Air Force personnel were told that is what the Marines were for.  The Marines guarded the base.

Now for the Army.  I worked on Ft Wainwright for five years.  During that time we had many accidental discharges on Post.  Young single guys would go down town and buy a pistol.  They would bring it back to post, but instead of taking it to the armory as directed for personnel living in the barracks, they would take it to a friends house in post housing.  Then on a Friday or Saturday night, there would be a group of people there partying and someone would bring out a gun.  The gun would be admired and passed around.  Loaded and unloaded many times.  But eventually some would pull the trigger, or drop the hammer on a live round.  Bang.

I would get the call about glass, or insulation flying around in a house, usually a bedroom.  I would go over and look at what the residents would show me.  I would find a bullet hole in either the window or wall.  By aligning bullet holes I could get a good idea of where the bullet came from.  I would then call the MPs.  The MPs would look at what I showed them and they would go to the quarters where the bullet had came from.  During their investigation they would find out what had happened.  The post Commander would repromand someone, blaming it on the fact that the troop did not understand how the gun worked.  He was only trained with an M-4, not a Glock, Colt, Ruger, or S&W.  So instead of getting training to prevent future accidental discharges of pistols, they would tighten up the control of guns on Post.  Therefore unless they are in training, the troops are not allowed to have guns in their possession on Post.  To keep one at their quarters, it has to be registered and kept unloaded in a locked case.  Troops are not allowed to carry concealed off Post period.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

by partying i assume you mean consumption of alcohol since street drugs are illegal. do you think being under the influence would cause improper handling of a weapon even if a person is fully trained in the use of that weapon?

I'm not sure what Air Force you were in, but I'd rather have gone into a fire fight with my men (and women)than all the ground pounders I ever met.  We shot at least once a year and before every deployment.  They were smart as whips and knew how to shoot.

Ground pounders? Is that simular to PROPELLER SMELLERS?
I would refer to these brave men and women in Ft. Hood as PATRIOTS, and a special thanks to the much criticized COLLECTIVELY CIVILIAN "FEMALE" POLICE OFFICER, whom after shot in both legs and a shoulder KEPT SHOOTING. I SUPPOSE SWAMPY YOU WOULD REFER TO HER AS A PIG? That's what they used to call us.

My Army pards always called us wing nuts.  Marines are Jar Heads......etc.  These are military terms.  I live in a military town.  I served in the military.  My son is at war.  My nephews are at war.  I would hope we are all patriots.  Nobody has more respect for women than me.  I trained dozens of them & felt that they were for the most part better than men at the job.
