Ummmmm Did anyone find it troubling that NO ONE is thumb stalling the touch hole?

AND they are doing rapid fire...............  I'm glad I am looking at building a breech loader..........

At least one man operation isn't as chancy!

Well aside from thumbstalling the vent, the gent in the foreground was at or near the muzzle upon discharge. I was sure when firing a cannon all members of the gun crew had to be on either side at a safe distance of course. Frank

The guy loading the one on the field carriage at the far end of the line held the rammer with his thumbs facing towards the muzzle rather than the other way around.  Loved him setting it off with the pistol though.

I have witnessed that done here on a recreated Brig out of Conn. back in 1981, the touch hole was so clogged with rust and debris that they used a blunderbuss to
fire the cannon it was the only way to get fire down the hole........ :o

A quick-fire competition/demonstration: Brighter than brilliant! I wonder if still having a complete right hand to offer to one's fellow cannoneers for a congratulatory shake is considered a gift from God, or the result of seriously honing one's skills?

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Looks like it was only one fellow doing that. I don't know why.

I believe he spilled some powder onto the table top: you can see it flashing underneath the cannon at approximately 8:12 and 9:06. Personally, I prefer to have all of the powder inside the piece when it goes off. ;)

Check out this fellow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJLTti8mHTc&feature=fvw. First he uses a mallet to force load the cannon, then he places his body directly in front of the muzzle and pushes the rammer with his stomach ...
