Pyrodex Pellet Box in the Field?
« on: October 29, 2003, 02:45:49 PM »
Would it be better to carry the pyrodex pellets in individual "speed loaders" while hunting or is the box they come in OK? I've got two "speed loaders" that hold three pellets, projectile, and a 209 primer. Should I get a couple more "speed loaders" or carry the box in my pack? TIA. Mike

Mike,
I would opt for the speedloaders in your possibles bag and keep the box in the car or back at camp.  No sence in geting the whole box damp while out in the woods.

I have found that I can carry several speed loaders with back up shots, my short starter and capper with caps in one pocket while I am hunting. I usually carry 5 backups and have never needed more than that in the filed. This is a lot easier than having to carry a big clunky possibles bag along in the field.

Mike,
I know they're not quite as handy, but 35mm film canistors work every bit as good and the price is right.  Just dump in the sabot first, then the pellets and finally the primer on top.

If you cone the muzzle, you can even throw the short starter away.  Thumb start the bullet and ram it home with the ram rod.  It works fine in my Lyman GPR, and should do so with an in-line.

if you get the 4 in 1 speed loader from t/c you dont need to cone the muzzle or need a short starter.
You load up to 100 grs of powder in the top, then put the bullet/ sabot in the bottom. and it even has a place for the #11 cap.
All you do is open the top pore in the posder, then cinter the bullet and push down on the top and it rams the bullet in the bore  then you  just use the ram rod. it is fast and easy. I carry 2 ready to go with me and If i use one i will refill it using one of my old style speed loaders.

TC makes a new black 4 in 1 speed loader that handles up to 150 grains of powder. Other wise it has the same features as the red 100 grain model.
